As part of our 2025–2028 Strategic Priorities to expand program reach in rural communities, we are excited to announce the official opening of a new community-based office in Kalangba – Fula Town, Bombali District, Northern Province. This marks a significant step in our commitment to bringing vital support services closer to underserved children, vulnerable populations, families, and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) who are often left behind due to geographic and systemic barriers.

In support of this expansion, we have established strong partnerships with key local institutions and community stakeholders, including:
• Local traditional and community leaders
• SLMB Primary School
• WCSL Primary School

These partnerships will enable us to deliver school-based outreach, child protection programs, psychosocial support, community education, and SGBV response services directly within Kalangba and its surrounding areas.

During our launch, Mr. Foday Kamara, our Kalangba Program Coordinator, met with community leaders to introduce the Foundation, share our vision, and highlight the importance of this collaboration in addressing urgent local needs—particularly those affecting children, women, and disadvantaged adults.

Mr. Hassan Kamara, Field Officer – Kalangba, also engaged with the leadership of our partner schools to discuss how this partnership will support student safety, learning, and overall well-being.

Representing our Western Urban head office, Mr. Samuel Borbor, Mr. Leonard Decker, and our dedicated intern Ms. Blessing Kamara traveled to Kalangba to show their support and facilitate the successful launch of our rural operations.

This expansion is more than just a new office—it is a promise: to serve, protect, and empower the most vulnerable where help is needed most.

Shalom Rescue Foundation Marks World Menstrual Hygiene Day by Distributing Sanitary and Hygiene Products to Girls from Five Schools

In celebration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, Shalom Rescue Foundation proudly organized a meaningful outreach event under the theme “Help Save My Period.” This impactful initiative reached girls from Regent Square Municipal Primary School, Kroobay Municipal Primary School, Dr. S.M. Broderick Municipal Primary School, FAWE School, and Rural Education Committee Primary School Sussex (Old York Road, Freetown Peninsula). During the outreach, we distributed sanitary pads and essential hygiene products to support the menstrual health and well-being of the students.

The event aimed to break the stigma surrounding menstruation, raise awareness about menstrual hygiene, and equip young girls with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their periods with dignity. In many marginalized communities, girls continue to face period poverty, leading to school absenteeism, emotional distress, and long-term disadvantages. Through this outreach, Shalom Rescue Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the health, dignity, and rights of adolescent girls.

Beyond the distribution of care packages, our team led interactive educational sessions focused on menstrual health, debunking harmful myths, and encouraging open conversations. These sessions created safe spaces where girls felt supported, heard, and empowered. During our visits, we engaged students in open dialogue to normalize menstruation and address the real challenges girls face when access to proper menstrual care is limited.

We emphasized that menstruation should never be a source of shame, nor a reason for missing school or compromising one’s health. The response from the girls was both powerful and emotional—many expressed their gratitude, sharing how important it was to feel acknowledged and supported. For some, it was their first opportunity to speak openly about their experiences.

By investing in menstrual health, we are not only protecting physical well-being but also boosting confidence, improving school attendance, and advancing gender equality. This initiative is a reflection of Shalom Rescue Foundation’s broader mission to empower vulnerable and underprivileged individuals through holistic, community-driven support.

At Shalom Rescue Foundation, we recognize that period poverty is a barrier to gender equality, and we remain committed to changing that reality. Through initiatives like this, we aim to protect the rights, health, and futures of girls across Sierra Leone—one school, one conversation, and one care package at a time.

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, in collaboration with The IWD National Steering Committee, celebrated International Women’s Day under the theme:
“For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment.”

Ms. Raymonda Macauley represented the Shalom Rescue Foundation at the event.

Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh emphasized the importance of gender equality, stating:
“Today, I will speak as a citizen, as a male, a HeForShe champion, and as a leader of a movement that will stop at nothing until every girl and every woman, regardless of tribe, religion, education, physical or cognitive ability, or age, reaches her fullest potential.”

He also addressed key issues, including women’s political participation, economic empowerment, gender-based violence, and access to quality education.

Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh stressed the importance of turning commitments into measurable actions to improve the lives of women and girls in Sierra Leone. He expressed gratitude to Sierra Leonean women who continue to inspire future generations, stating:
“Together, I salute the courageous and fearless Sierra Leonean women who have and continue to serve as role models for our girls in a bid to secure a future for all Sierra Leoneans.”

“For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment.”

Mr. Samuel Borbor represented the Shalom Rescue Foundation at the event.

In his message, the Vice President emphasized the crucial role of women in society, stating that their empowerment is essential for growth and progress. He highlighted the need for equal opportunities, urging that women should not be confined to traditional roles such as market sellers or housewives but should be encouraged to pursue leadership positions and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the nation.

He also underscored the role of men as allies in the fight for gender equality. He called on men to stand in solidarity with women, protect their rights, and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. He stressed that no man should take advantage of a woman, and when injustices occur, women must feel empowered to speak up and seek justice.

“True progress happens when women and men work together to create an environment where equality thrives. By uplifting women, we build a stronger, more just world for everyone. Let’s continue to advocate for change, challenge limitations, and empower women to reach their full potential.”

3. Madam Mercy Kamara’s Journey: Rising from Loss to Empower Others

Mercy’s story is one of unimaginable loss and unwavering resilience. She lost her father at a young age and was left in the care of her older sister and mother. But tragedy struck again—her sister, who had cared for her, passed away, leaving her and her mother in deep grief. The pain was unbearable, and soon after, her mother also succumbed to heartbreak, leaving Mercy to fend for herself.

Despite facing such devastating losses at an early age, Mercy refused to be defeated. She channeled her strength into building a future for herself, developing skills in hairstyling, installations, and makeup artistry. Through sheer determination and perseverance, she turned her talent into a means of survival and, eventually, a thriving profession.

Her commitment to success didn’t stop there—Mercy is currently pursuing higher education at IPAM, studying Procurement and Supply. Her dedication to both academics and her passion for beauty and mentorship make her a true inspiration.

Today, Mercy is more than just a beauty expert—she is a volunteer mentor at the Shalom Rescue Foundation, dedicating her time to teaching young people the same skills that helped her rise above adversity. She empowers marginalized youth, giving them the tools to become independent and confident in their abilities.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate Madam Mercy Kamara—a woman who turned pain into power, loss into strength, hardship into opportunity, and now uses her success to uplift others. 1. Madam Isatu Bangura’s Journey: From Struggle to Success

Meet Isatu, who grew up in a small, overcrowded home where survival was a daily struggle. As a child, the harsh realities of life weighed heavily on her dreams, leaving little hope for the future. But she turned to what she knew best—her hands. She watched in fascination as women in her community braided hair and began practicing tirelessly on her younger siblings and friends. What started as a hobby became a passion, and soon, she was braiding hair to earn money and support her family. Determined to succeed, she saved every penny, learned new techniques, and built a loyal clientele.

Through perseverance and skill, Isatu turned her small hustle into a thriving business. Today, she is not only a successful hair braider but also a source of inspiration. Remembering her struggles, she now volunteers with the Shalom Rescue Foundation, mentoring young people in the art of hair braiding. She empowers marginalized youth with skills that open doors to financial independence and a brighter future.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate Madam Isatu Bangura—a young woman who turned hardship into opportunity, rose above adversity, and now lifts others as she climbs.
