In 2017, Youth Partnership for Peace and Development (YPPD), with support from Cordaid and the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (CSPPS), launched United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2250 in Sierra Leone following its adoption in 2015. The objective of the launch was to localize the resolution within the context of Sierra Leone by building national consensus around the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Agenda, initiating discussions toward a National Action Plan, and ensuring concrete follow-up actions.

As part of the global YPS agenda reporting process, The Missing Peace—the First Independent Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security, was published in 2018 and formally presented to the United Nations Security Council. The study was prepared under the mandate of UNSCR 2250 (2015) and informed by several national, regional, and global consultations.

Seven years after the first study, and marking the 10th anniversary of the YPS Agenda in 2025, the Second Independent Progress Study on YPS is currently underway. Youth Partnership for Peace and Development with funds from Interpeace and at Cordaid, and in partnership with the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and the YPS Coalition, convened a National Consultation on Tuesday, 27 January 2026.

It brought together key stakeholders, civil society organisations, and youth advocates from across all 16 districts to contribute to the second progress study, capturing meaningful insights that shaped the discussions and informed the country’s national inputs into the process.

The consultation also brought relevant stakeholders to interface with young people from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Information and Civic Education. Mr. Bockarie, Director of Policy and lead expert at the Ministry of Youth Affairs shared major milestones on government's commitment and ongoing National Action Plan development process which UNICEF Sierra Leone is already supporting together with other partners.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister Chernor Bah, who led consultations in the lead-up to the launch of the YPS Agenda in Amman, Jordan, in 2015 highlighted the critical role of young people in promoting peace and sustaining inclusive development. He further cited President Julius Maada Bio’s commitments to fostering inclusive national development and youth participation.

Setting the scene for the consultation, YPPD’s Executive Coordinator, Musa Ansumana Soko, delivered a presentation on the YPS journey in Sierra Leone. Drawing on his extensive experience in advancing the YPS Agenda nationally, he laid a strong foundation for informed and meaningful deliberations throughout the consultation.

Another sad day for our girls in Sierra Leone.
The President has signed the new Child Rights Act, which regrettably undermines comprehensive protection and safeguarding of our children’s wellbeing, as Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) one of the gravest violations of the rights of girls and women was excluded from the law.

Despite persistent advocacy, the voices of countless survivors, and the tireless efforts of organizations and young activists, this harmful practice remains unaddressed in our legal framework. Let me be clear, we will not relent. We remain steadfast in our fight to protect every girl from all forms of violence and harmful traditional practices. We will continue to engage, educate, and advocate until every girl in Sierra Leone can grow up free, safe, and empowered to reach her fullest potential.

On Friday, joined Y-ACT Youth In Action made a big mark in Sierra Leone as we joined the World Contraception Day commemoration in Freetown. The event brought together over 100 young people and policymakers, including the Minister of Health and development partners.

One of the highlights of the day was an expert session led by the Marie Stopes Country Director, which helped dismantle stigma, myths, and misconceptions around contraception.

We also hosted an intergenerational fireside chat with representatives from the Ministry of Gender, the Ministry of Education, UNFPA, and two young people. The discussion focused on promoting contraceptive uptake, identifying existing gaps, and breaking down barriers.

Coalition members also showcased their work through booths. The Planned Parenthood Association of Sierra Leone distributed contraceptive materials to participants, GADNET showcases their menstraul hygiene kit and the incredible work they have been doing, while YPPD shared abridged copies of the CAHLS curriculum.

From 10-12 Sept 2025, youth leaders across Africa were engaged on: (i) TransitionalJusticePolicy and Peacebuilding, (ii) Media and Al for peace, (iii) Combating hate speech and disinformation, (iv) Strengthening youth networks.

The first two days of the training explored the African Union Transitional Justice Policy, its purpose, and key elements, as well as the link between transitional justice, peacebuilding, and emerging conflicts in Africa. Through case studies and discussions, we delved into the dynamics of conflict and peace, highlighting human rights, gender discrimination, and legal processes within transitional justice. It was indeed a good learning experience and empowerment tool for my work with Restless Development Sierra Leone
