The 50/50 Group, with support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, conducted a Gender Transformative Approach (GTA) workshop in Freetown. Sessions were led in partnership with the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone, L.A.W.Y.E.R.S., and Christian Aid Sierra Leone.
The training equipped correctional staff, welfare officers, legal practitioners, and gender focal persons from centres in Freetown, Bo, and Makeni to challenge harmful norms, address sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and embed human rights in correctional practices. This initiative marks an important step toward building more gender-sensitive, inclusive, and rights-based correctional services in Sierra Leone.

Today we celebrate women who've left their footprints in the sand for others to build on.

The 50/50 Group engaged MDAs, CSOs, and women from peri-urban communities across the Western Area Rural and Urban Districts to discuss women’s role in climate resilience and adaptation through the Women Empowered for Climate Action and Food Security (WeCAF) Project. Supported by the Feminists for Alternatives on Climate and Environment (FACE) Programme, this initiative empowers women producers in peri-urban Freetown to respond effectively to climate change.
The 50/50 Group believes in women’s leadership at all levels, ensuring their voices shape inclusive and climate-responsive policies. Women are the backbone of our food systems, and WeCAF is committed to equipping them with the tools and opportunities to build resilient and sustainable agriculture for the future.

50/50, with support from Irish Aid and in partnership with BAN and TDS through the Empowering Women, Youths, and Marginalized Groups for Inclusive Governance and Peace project, held an engagement in Moyamba District to present the community-level audit report on the implementation of gender-focused laws. The audit assessed awareness, compliance, and the systems in place for enforcement, and was commissioned by women’s community solidarity groups, CSOs, and partners.It highlighted how these laws serve as legal frameworks for women’s empowerment, with women occupying over 30% of positions across various chiefdoms, some capacity-building provided by MDAs and CSOs, and existing structures that support protection. Challenges remain, including limited community stakeholder’s capacity on the provisions of the laws, financial constraints in reaching remote communities, delays in access to justice for SGBV survivors, patriarchal norms and customs, and other local-level barriers. The engagement concluded with the development of a district action plan, creation of communication materials for awareness-raising, and a proposed legacy fund for survivors. Similar engagements are planned for the remaining project districts of Karene, Port Loko, Kambia, and Tonkolili.

The 50/50 Group expresses deep concern over the alleged intimidation and public ridicule faced by Councillor Zainab Conteh, Chief Councillor of the Freetown City Council, in the discharge of her official duties.

We view this incident as a serious attack on women’s leadership and democratic participation. The reported actions and public remarks allegedly made by officials of the Ministry of Local Government reflect a troubling pattern of institutional resistance that women in governance continue to face across Sierra Leone.

This incident illustrates the wider gender bias that undermines women’s ability to lead freely and confidently in public life. The 50/50 Group condemns this intimidation in the strongest possible terms and calls for:

1. An immediate and impartial investigation into the incident by the relevant authorities;

2. Public accountability from the Ministry of Local Government; and

3. Full enforcement of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act to protect women leaders from discrimination and harassment.

Women in leadership deserve respect, institutional support, and safety —not humiliation or obstruction.

The 50/50 Group stands in full solidarity with Councillor Zainab Conteh and with all women who continue to lead courageously despite systemic barriers.

We look forward to an equality that is not only promised, but practised.

In her keynote address at the event, Global President, Dr Majeks-Walker highlighted the crucial role rural women play in Sierra Leone’s development, while current president Fredline M’Cormack-Hale, in her statement, spoke of parlaying this leadership into the political arena. Warmest congratulations to all recipients, and thank you to Advocacy for Women and Youth Empowerment for inviting us to share in this special day.
