đź‘‹ HI Conducted One-Day Awareness Training Workshop for District Managers and DHMT on Disability and Inclusion

From April 22nd to May 2nd, 2024, Handicap International - Humanity & Inclusion (HI), in partnership with Concern Worldwide and with financial support from FCDO, conducted a one-day awareness training workshop on disability and inclusion. This training was part of the Saving Lives in Sierra Leone project (phase 3) and took place in each of the six operational districts: Kenema, Kono, Bombali, Kambia, Moyamba, and Western Area Urban.

The objective of the training was to equip District Health Management Teams (DHMT) and District Managers with the necessary knowledge on disability and inclusion when providing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SHSR) services.

Through this awareness training, HI and its partners are committed to creating an inclusive healthcare system. This system aims to provide a safe space for individuals with different kind of impairments, ensuring they have access to healthcare services. By supporting and building the capacity of health workers and staff, we aim to make healthcare accessible to all.

"I never knew the difference between impairment and disability before this training. I thought people using aid devices like wheelchairs, earpieces, and crutches were all living with disabilities. Now, I understand that these devices help manage functional limitations of the body. People with physical, intellectual, or emotional impairments can thrive within their communities if barriers are removed.

As a Community Health Worker (CHO), this training has shown me the importance of prioritizing people with various impairments in my work to enhance their participation and promote inclusion. I will ensure that my colleagues gain knowledge on disability inclusion through awareness-raising efforts. Discrimination has no place in our community; disability is a part of human diversity," said Aminata, a CHO from Kuntorloh community.

Aminata expressed her gratitude to Humanity & Inclusion (HI) and UNICEF for facilitating an outstanding two-day training on May 30th and 31st, 2024, focused on Disability Assessment and Determination (DAD) tools at Kingdom Hall in Freetown.

Through the DAD project, HI delivered the training to five members of the 25-chiefdom assessment team (CAT) to prepare them for cognitive testing of the DAD tools. The training aimed to enhance participants' understanding of disability inclusion, HI's safeguarding policies, and data collection ethics, ensuring they can effectively conduct cognitive testing and interact professionally with beneficiaries and community members.

The DAD tools, developed by various multi-stakeholders working with persons with disabilities, are now ready for testing. The trained CAT members will conduct cognitive testing on these tools with 100 persons with disabilities in the Western Area.

Thanks to UNICEF, and the Ministry of Health for this initiative.

Handicap International - Humanity & Inclusion (HI), in partnership with CARE International through the Inclusive Technical Assistance Project (ITA), is proud to support the implementation of the HIV and AIDS Prevention Project (HAPP IV). This technical assistance aims to empower youth and girls/women with visual impairments by ensuring they have access to critical information on HIV and Education on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

On April 19th and 20th, 2024, HI conducted a transformative training on inclusive pedagogies for 30 teachers from five selected junior schools in Freetown. These schools include Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG), West Africa Methodist Collegiate Secondary School, Sierra Leone Grammar School, Methodist Girls High School, and Government Secondary Technical School. These institutions were chosen based on their significant number of visually impaired students, who are the primary focus of this initiative.

The training was designed to ensure that every child and adolescent, regardless of their abilities, can access essential information on Child and Adolescent Health and Life Skills through braille and audio formats. During the sessions, teachers explored various teaching styles to accommodate the diverse needs of learners in their classrooms.

By the end of the training, teachers demonstrated a deep understanding and acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to promote inclusive learning environments. They developed action plans to address barriers faced by children with different kind of impairments within their schools, ensuring that every student can thrive and reach their full potential.

HANDICAP INTERNATIONAL/HUMANITY & INCLUSION, WITH THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF FOREIGN, COMMONWEALTH & DEVELOPMENT OFFICE (FCDO) ORGANIZED A ONE-DAY TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR ORGANIZATIONS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES (OPDS) IN SIERRA LEONE.

The workshop, held at the Grass Root conference hall in Freetown on March 15, 2024, focused on enhancing the capacity of OPDs in proposal writing and budgeting for the upcoming “Saving Lives in Sierra Leone Project Phase 3”.

Under this forthcoming project, OPDs from Kenema, Kono, Bombali, Kambia, Moyamba, and the Western Area Urban will be empowered and supported to work closely with disability and women's rights organizations to advocate for improved health services and rights awareness in their communities. Abdulai Hassan Kamara, the project manager, highlighted the project's goal of strengthening the health system in Sierra Leone by engaging OPDs to promote sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and enhance healthcare access for women and girls, including those with disabilities.

Abubakar Koroma from Concern for Development of Disabled Women and Children (CDDWC) shared insights on the challenges faced by women with disabilities in accessing healthcare: "The perception in Sierra Leone is that women with disabilities must not have a sexual life; they face stigma and discrimination in accessing healthcare. This workshop is a step towards changing these harmful beliefs."

During the workshop, Lamin S. Bangura from WESOFOD - Sierra Leone Kambia District expressed gratitude to HI, emphasizing the transformative impact of empowering OPDs to address disability issues in the country.

Empowering Communities in Sierra Leone through Inclusive Sustainable Agriculture

In Sierra Leone, poverty and disability often meet, making it challenging for many individuals and families to access basic necessities like food and health care services.

To address this issue, Handicap International-Humanity & Inclusion (HI) with the financial support of Mr. and Mrs. Leibundgut, the Sandoz Foundation, and the Michelham Foundation is implementing an inclusive agricultural farm project to support gender and disability transformation. The primary goal of this initiative is to empower 200 individuals living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups into sustainable agricultural practices and financial autonomy through trainings and the establishment of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). VSLAs provide a secure way for members to save money, access loans, and receive financial education.

The project is currently being executed by HI in partnership with NETHIPS and Visit Sierra Leone Travel (VSLT) in Moyamba and Western Urban districts, where it has already started to produce positive results. Beneficiaries are reporting increased confidence and economic stability, marking a significant step toward improving their
