Yesterday marked a proud moment for the National Federation of Farmers of Sierra Leone (NaFFSL) as IFAD, led by Madam Pascaline, officially handed over a vehicle to support the Federation’s work nationwide.

Madam Pascaline reaffirmed IFAD’s commitment to empowering rural farmers, strengthening grassroots structures, and supporting agricultural transformation. “NaFFSL is a symbol of resilience, transformative leadership, and strong organization,” she said. She also emphasized that the vehicle is not just a gift, but an investment to enhance NaFFSL’s mobility, advocacy, and connection with its members across Sierra Leone.

Receiving the vehicle, Madam Yatta Samah, President of NaFFSL, described the gesture as a timely intervention, citing the longstanding challenges of reaching farmers across the districts. “Feedsalone cannot succeed without strong farmer organizations,” she stressed.

Representing the Ministry of Agriculture, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Prince Cole, praised IFAD’s impactful work, especially in supporting Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector and projects like Feedsalone and poultry development.

Regional Forum on Sustainable Agricultural Systems and SRI – A Boost for NaFFSL and West African Farmers

From May 4th to 8th, 2025, the city of Bamako, Mali hosted a landmark Regional Forum on the Transformation to Sustainable Agricultural Systems, with a focus on sharing experiences in scaling, financing, and institutionalizing the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). The event brought together delegates from 16 African countries under the framework of the RICOWAS Project, coordinated by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) with partners including CORAF, IER-Mali, and Cornell University.

Representing Sierra Leone, the National Federation of Farmers of Sierra Leone (NaFFSL) proudly participated, with its National Coordinator attending alongside other key institutions such as the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI). This high-level inclusion reflects the growing regional and international recognition of NaFFSL's role in championing farmer-centered initiatives and sustainable rice production in Sierra Leone.

The forum emphasized the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) as a proven, climate-smart agricultural technique that significantly increases rice yields while reducing water use and input costs. It also provided a vital platform for knowledge sharing, policy discussions, and cross-country collaboration, strengthening the collective efforts to improve food security and resilience among West African smallholder farmers.

For NaFFSL, the forum offered a strategic opportunity to learn best practices, network with regional stakeholders, and reinforce its commitment to empowering farmers. The exposure further solidifies its position as a key actor in agricultural transformation in Sierra Leone and opens avenues for collaboration and resource mobilization to scale up SRI and other sustainable practices nationwide.
