Around 130,000 waste is generated annually in Sierra Leone, but only a fraction, about 6 percent is recycled.

In Tombo, one of Sierra Leone’s largest fishing towns, fish is not simply food β€” it is part of everyday care and trusted to sustain strength and long life. However, as pressure on marine fish stocks intensifies, efforts to secure food and nutrition are reshaping how fish is produced and accessed.

Wild fish stocks are in decline all over the world under the combined pressures of overfishing and climate change. This is true for the coastal waters of west Africa too. One response is promoting fish farmed on land. In Sierra Leone, this is generating growing policy attention.

In this article, Salieu Kabba Sankoh from that University of Sierra Leone and Nwamaka Okeke-Ogbuafor from the University of Glasgow, who is the recipient of a - AXA Research Fund grant, outline that:

β€’ Unless fish farmers can show clearly that farmed fish is as nutritious as fish caught in the ocean, it will never earn the trust of communities in places where wild fish have come to mean long life.
β€’ A nutrition-sensitive approach, designing fish farming around nutritional quality from the outset, rather than focusing primarily on production or income, is key to efficiently promote fish farming
β€’ Government authorities must set and enforce basic standards for feeds, water management, fingerlings and testing, so that quality is assured.

Our team has successfully completed Phase One of our community project titled β€œUtilising the Eco-Friendly Trash Can in Combating Marine Pollution Practices”, implemented across two targeted coastal zones in Tombo, Western Rural Sierra Leone.

During this phase, we actively engaged and mobilised local fishers, strengthening their understanding of sustainable fishing practices that safeguard marine ecosystems while promoting hygiene and responsible waste management during fishing voyages. In addition, we collaboratively strategised the next steps, which include the provision and utilisation of eco-friendly trash cans for local boat owners to further reduce marine pollution.

This initiative will be fully rolled out during Phase Two of the project.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Global Youth Mobilisation (GYM–YEF) and the Big Six Family for their invaluable support and commitment to youth-led environmental action.

A Grateful Milestone for BlueGreen Environment Initiatives Sierra Leone.

Though this post comes a bit late, our gratitude remains as strong as ever. We are deeply honored to have been selected as one of the recipients of the Youth Empowerment Fund, an incredible initiative of the Big Six Youth Organizations (World Organization of the Scout Movement, World YMCA, World YWCA, World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award), funded by the European Union and implemented through the Global Youth Mobilization. This recognition is more than just a grant; it’s a powerful endorsement of our youth-led innovation and commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Sierra Leone.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the European Union for empowering young changemakers like us to drive real, lasting impact in our communities. Your support fuels our mission to build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for all.

Together, we are turning ideas into action and passion into progress.

We have successfully completed a three-day participation in the Sierra Leone Innovation Conference, which convened remarkable changemakers to address environmental and socio-economic challenges in Sierra Leone through innovation.

The conference was graced by distinguished dignitaries, including His Excellence Rtd Brad Jelious MAADA BIO President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and Chief Minister Moinina David Sengeh PHD, among others. Their presence underscored the importance of innovation in driving sustainable progress across the nation.

Our team actively engaged in discussions and showcased our commitment to using technology and innovation to tackle environmental issues, foster green job creation, and empower communities.

Through our participation, we highlighted the vital role of inclusive digital initiatives in building a greener, more prosperous Sierra Leone.

The 2025 Sierra Leone Innovates: Digital Government Summit, also held during the conference, marked five years of progress under the National Innovation and Digital Strategy (NIDS). It brought together policymakers, technology leaders, innovators, and regional stakeholders to:

βœ… Reflect on achievements
βœ… Address ongoing challenges
βœ… Map out the next phase of digital transformation

The summit’s theme, β€œDigitization for All,” emphasized building an inclusive digital government that leaves no one behindβ€”creating job opportunities, driving sustainable economic growth, and ensuring that all Sierra Leoneans benefit from digital initiatives.

A key milestone was the reaffirmation of the national goal of creating 65,000 jobs, underscoring our shared dedication to technology-driven, equitable development.

We are proud to have contributed to this important dialogue and to stand alongside other innovators and leaders in shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for Sierra Leone.

Plastic pollution is not only a public health concern but also a serious threat to the fishing sectorβ€”particularly for small coastal communities whose livelihoods largely depend on marine resources.

The urgency to diversify economic activities in these areas is critical to building community resilience and adapting to the impacts of environmental change.

Our team has been at the forefront of collaborative efforts across several coastal communities in Sierra Leone, raising awareness and introducing innovative strategies that encourage a shift toward eco-business ventures.

By promoting eco-friendly technologies and sustainable creativity, we aim to foster local green jobs and strengthen community livelihoods.
