Celebrating 81 Years of Global Impact and 38 Years of Service in Sierra Leone

Christian Aid West and Central Africa joined countries around the world to celebrate Christian Aid Week 2026, marking 81 years of global impact and 38 years of service in Sierra Leone.

This year’s celebration highlighted efforts to reduce urban poverty in Kenya through a week of activities that showcased Kenyan culture, shared meals, and prayers for the organization’s mission and partnerships.

In Sierra Leone, the week-long celebrations, which began on Monday, 11th May, concluded on Friday, 15th May 2026, with a special Prayer and Lunch gathering at the CCSL Hall at King Harman Road in Freetown. The event brought together Christian Aid partners, NGOs, faith leaders, and government representatives in a spirit of unity and collaboration.

Speaking at the event, Programme and Partnership Lead, Mattia Koi Dimoh, reflected on Christian Aid’s work in Sierra Leone and the importance of strong partnerships in transforming communities and advancing a world free from poverty and injustice, where everyone is treated with dignity and able to experience life in all its fullness.

He shared with the guests the organization’s transition from a Country Programme model to a Multi-Country Cluster model, reinforcing Christian Aid’s commitment to shifting more power and resources to partners and the communities to create impact.

Rev. Karim Kelvin Koroma led the prayer session, reflecting on James 5:13 – 20, encouraging us to pray for each other and for our work in God’s vineyard.

The celebration ended with the sharing of food and drinks, symbolizing love, unity, and togetherness.

In a joint monitoring visit to project districts, Christian Aid through the YOULEAD EU-funded project engaged with community and district stakeholders in Kono District to gather their perspectives on project implementation, discuss challenges encountered so far, and gain first-hand insight into how youths in vocational skills training are responding at their various places of assignment. The project offers diverse skills training opportunities for male and female youths including persons living with disabilities.

Key sites visited were the Solar and Electrical Installation and the Information, Communication and Technology Vocational Training Centres, where trainees demonstrated positive attitudes toward the program. They also shared how the skills they are acquiring will empower them to become more independent and contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.

The monitoring team will continue visits across several communities in the coming days to further assess progress, strengthen engagement, and ensure the project is delivering sustainable impact where it matters most.

✨Driving Change Together: Partners Leading the Way in Sierra Leone✨

Earlier this year, Christian Aid launched its West and Central Africa Multi-Country Cluster, with its Hub in Abuja. Now, that vision is coming to life.

In Sierra Leone, a two-day co-creation workshop brought together key partners under this new model, ensuring partners were at the fore of the process, with Christian Aid providing guidance and support. The focus is to empower partners to take the driver’s seat in designing and delivering impactful, community-led solutions.

Centered on two of the four Signature Programmes - Women Transforming Economies and Climate Resilient Livelihoods, the workshop convened organizations like Women’s Network for Sustainable Development (WONES), the Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL), the Inter-Religious Council, and the Budget Advocacy Network (BAN). Another workship will take place next month to co-design two more Signature Programmes.

Through insightful discussions and collaborative sessions, one message stood out clearly: sustainable change begins with those closest to the communities. Partners are now shaping projects rooted in real needs, crafting solutions that drive lasting impact to advance the shared mission of ending poverty.

At Christian Aid, partnership is more than collaboration, it is about shifting power to partners and communities and enabling them unlock the full potential of local organizations and communities to create lasting change. Because when partners lead, communities thrive, and lasting change becomes inevitable.

One of Christian Aid’s implementing partners under the EU-funded YOULEAD project recently carried out an unannounced monitoring visit to vocational training centres in Falaba District.

The team observed ongoing training in tailoring, welding, and carpentry, where young participants showed strong attendance, active participation, and hands-on learning. It was clear that the trainees are committed and eager to gain practical skills that can support their future.

The visit helped ensure that the training is being delivered effectively, safely, and to a high standard. It also created space to engage directly with both trainers and trainees, understand their experiences, and address any challenges.

Through this initiative, young people are gaining certified skills, building confidence, and preparing themselves for employment or to start their own businesses within their communities.

Together, we are supporting young people to build skills, create opportunities, and shape a better future for themselves and the country.
