Glamouring Hope for Young Athletes: Sierra Leone Athletics Association and National Olympic Committee Introduce Youth Athlete Development Program

The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) and the National Olympic Committee (NOC) have launched the Youth Athlete Development Project during a grand ceremony held at the Port Loko Mini Stadium.

This project demonstrates a key step toward identifying young athletes, both boys and girls aged 12 to 18, through structured scouting and selection activities. It aims to provide youth athletes with quality training in athletics fundamentals, strengthen the skills of local coaches and technical officials, and establish a pathway for athlete progression from the grassroots level to national and international competitions.

Furthermore, the project seeks to ensure equal opportunities for both genders in athletics through talent nurturing and development across all regions and districts. The project will run nationwide from October 2025 to February 2026.

Executive members from all regions and districts, stakeholders, NOC Program Manager Bai Bangura, and pupils from various schools attended the launching ceremony. The attendees were warmly welcomed to Port Loko by the President of the Northwest Region, Bai Sheika Wurie.

SLAA President Martin Momoh Bangura, who expressed deep appreciation for the Youth Athlete Development Program, shared his optimism about the project’s potential and emphasized the importance of fairness and discipline during its implementation.

“This is a remarkable day. We have all shown resilience and commitment to embracing the growth of our young talents by giving them opportunities that are inclusive and fair,” he said.

“We must identify those who are truly qualified, not those who seek to manipulate the system through age fraud. The development process will be chronological, and each young athlete will be thoroughly screened through their National Identification Number (NIN) to ensure accuracy,” he added.

President Martin also expressed gratitude to the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone for their thoughtful consideration, continued support, and for fully funding the project.

“This is a huge investment in the athletics family and our young athletes, who can now train under dynamic conditions that will transform the future of athletics participation in Sierra Leone,” he continued.

David Sawyer, Head Coach and Project Director, spoke on the technical aspects of the initiative and encouraged regional coaches to remain dedicated in carrying out their responsibilities.

“We are entering a new era for our young athletes. This project will create a lasting legacy, ensuring that those selected can compete at the highest levels,” said Bai Bangura, NOC Program Manager.

Approximately one hundred and twenty (120) young athletes will be selected nationwide under the supervision of twenty experienced coaches, giving athletics in Sierra Leone a renewed face and foundation for future competitions.

Vice President of SLAA Attends 3rd CAA Congress in Nigeria

Vice President 1 of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA), Mr. Umaru Vandi Konovor, has departed for Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, to participate in the 3rd edition of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Congress. The congress is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the Conference Hall of the MKO Abiola International Stadium.

Mr. Konovor is joining the President of the CAA, Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, and representatives from 34 other African countries to deliberate on key issues shaping the future of African athletics. Discussions will focus on athlete development, structural reforms, sustainability, and strategies to enhance the competitive edge of African athletes on the global stage.

The CAA Congress is not only a precursor to the championship but also a strategic platform for policy formulation, vision-setting, and decision-making for the future of athletics on the continent.

As 35 nations prepare for this year’s championship, athletes are in high spirits, aiming to break records and deliver outstanding performances.

Unfortunately, Sierra Leone will not be participating in this year’s competition due to financial constraints and a lack of support from the government.

In the previous edition, Sierra Leonean athletes secured three medals, one silver and two bronze, despite facing numerous challenges in their bid to represent the nation.

Sierra Leone Athletics Association Holds Executive Committee Meeting

On Saturday, October 12, 2024, the Sierra Leone Athletics Association convened its executive committee meeting at the Olympic Africa Centre, Milton Margai Technical University in Goderich.

The meeting aimed to address important issues concerning the structural growth of the association.

President Martin Momoh Bangura chaired the meeting, welcoming all executive members and encouraging active participation in discussions to develop the association's goals. He also stressed the legitimacy of the executive committee, citing its importance as outlined in the constitution.

President Bangura briefly reviewed the association's successes and challenges, pointing out the negligence of some executive members in fulfilling their roles.

Dr. Abdulrahman Swaray, Deputy Executive Director of the National Sports Authority, mentioned his support for bringing executive members together and assured the association of government backing. He condemned the trend of athletes not returning after representing the country, stating, "Those athletes do it with impunity, and it has affected the growth of athletics."

Haroune Korjie, Director of Sports at the Ministry of Sports, and AG Koroma, representative of the National Olympic Committee, extended warm greetings from Minister of Sports Madam Augusta James Teima and NOC President Prince Sualley. They acknowledged ongoing issues within the athletics family and urged members to resolve nonproductive conflicts.

During roll-call, the chairman confirmed a constituted quorum, allowing the executive committee to make decisions. Reports on the status of regional associations were presented, stating challenges, finances, activities, and successes.

President Bangura called for a discussion on the realignment and streamlining of the SLAA executive, noting that some members might perform better in different positions.

A Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) was formed and adopted, chaired by the legal adviser. The committee includes the SLAA secretariat, regional heads, the Technical Director, the Public Relations Officer, Women's Representatives, and an Athletes Commission Representative, with a mandate to overhaul the constitution effectively.

The Boxing Day Sports Committee was also established, with the Organising Secretary as chair, to ensure successful events at Bo Mini Stadium in Bo City.

Dr. Adekali Sesay provided updates on the 2024 Grant for Growth Project.

A platform was created for members to express grievances and expectations in a "peace talk." After extensive discussions, members unanimously agreed to move past previous conflicts and work toward a unified future.

The atmosphere of unity marked a successful conclusion to the meeting.

The more we are together, the happier we shall be.
