Our founder Kirsty Wood has returned from her latest visit with the local teams in Sierra Leone.

In these secluded villages, young girls deal with challenging circumstances including high rates of teenage pregnancy and the emerging threat of local trafficking networks.

During the trip, Kirsty met young mothers like 15-year-old Selina and 18-year-old Mary. Their stories are tough, marked by poverty and broken promises. Yet, beneath the challenges, their resilience is breathtaking.

Thanks to the AdAmi Project, Mary, Selina, and 29 new young mothers—some as young as 13—have joined a new cohort.

Through life skills training and "Circle of Confidence" groups, they are already finding a safe space to heal, dance, connect, and reclaim their confidence.

Soon, they will begin vocational training and receive support to return to school.

We are so proud to walk alongside these young women as they gain the tools, networks, and hope needed to build brighter, safer futures for themselves and their children.

As Hawa, one of the young mothers, beautifully put it:

"I want to empower myself so I can support my family. I want to make them happy and give them something to smile about."

Shortly before the Easter break, our vocational training students took part in practicals as part of their training.

These practicals are an important way for the young mothers to apply the skills they have been learning in a hands-on setting, to monitor progress, and celebrate how far they have come in their learning.

Our tailoring students selected their fabrics and dress designs, then brought them to life in these beautiful finished pieces. At the same time, our catering and hospitality students created bright, colourful cakes and decorations.

Well done ladies, the clothes and cakes look amazing 👏 🎂 😋 👗

Our team and the young mothers are currently enjoying an extended Easter break, and we look forward to sharing more when activities resume. 💛

Safety and wellbeing are at the heart of The AdAmi Project ♥️

Last week, our team delivered a safeguarding refresher workshop for young mothers on the project, helping to strengthen their understanding of their rights and what they should expect in relation to their safety and wellbeing — on the project, at home, and in their communities.

The session was engaging, practical, and informative. Together, we discussed how to recognise concerns, what to do when something feels wrong, and how to report issues safely.

For many of the young mothers we support, safeguarding is not just a policy topic. Many have experienced serious violations of their safety and wellbeing, including r**e, coercion, and abuse. That is why this work matters so much.

Through the AdAmi Project, we do more than support access to education and opportunities. We also equip young mothers with knowledge of their rights, build their confidence to speak up, and help create safer environments where they are treated with dignity and respect.

By empowering young mothers with this knowledge, we are taking important steps every day to protect and uphold their safety and wellbeing 🌟

✨ Our March News Blog is out now! ✨

We’re excited to share some big updates from the AdAmi Project, including plans for a permanent home for the Community Girls Network (CGN)!

The wonderful and wise CGN mentor and leader, Doris, recently told us that, ‘The new building will show people that we are serious. That we are here to stay.’ 💪

And we believe you, Doris! Many of you will already be familiar with the CGN’s work, which started in 2020 when a group of young mothers began organising self-led study groups and gatherings in their community. Since then, under the leadership of our local partner MEANS, the CGN has grown into a vibrant and active network of over 300 young mothers across several communities!

The new hub will offer a permanent and safe space for the young mothers to come together to engage in vocational training, livelihood activities, planning meetings, social gatherings, and more. It will, in essence, become their home.

The local team are busy making final preparations before the building work begins, hopefully very soon.

Today we’re celebrating our amazing AdAmi Social Workers on World Social Work Day.

Social workers support our young mothers, their children and families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

They listen, advocate, and walk alongside our young mothers.

Their work often happens quietly and behind the scenes – but the impact is life-changing.

From helping families stay together to ensuring children are safe and supported, their dedication makes a real difference every single day.

International Women’s Day may have been yesterday, but the celebrations continue in Bo, Sierra Leone, where our team will mark the occasion today alongside the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and partner organisations, reflecting on this year’s theme: Rights. Justice. Action.

At AdAmi, those words speak directly to why our work began.

In 2018, when Sierra Leone’s ban on pregnant girls attending school was still in force, a 15-year-old girl called Aminata was forced to leave school when her pregnancy was discovered. She was denied her right to an education and, soon after, was also forced out of her family home. Like so many young mothers, she needed justice, support, and the chance to rebuild her future.

Her story helped plant the seed for the AdAmi Project.

Although the ban was lifted in 2020, young mothers in Sierra Leone still face huge barriers to education, safety, opportunity and dignity. Every day, we take action so they can return to school or training, overcome financial barriers, find safety and stability, and begin to rebuild their lives.

Today, Aminata is in her second year at university, studying early childhood development, after completing secondary school and receiving a scholarship in 2024. One day, she hopes to open her own nursery in her home town, so that other young mothers and their children do not have to suffer as she did.

Her story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when rights are protected, injustice is challenged, and action is taken.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Millicent is one of the many young mothers to have recently graduated from our project. When our social worker, Andreta, first met her in 2022, she was withdrawn and overwhelmed.

‘She couldn’t even talk,’ recalls Andreta. She was one of the biggest introverts and could barely talk. She was really frustrated.’

Today, Millicent is a different person. She completed an 18-month hospitality and catering course with our project and quickly found work at a busy local hotel.

She serves drinks at the poolside bar, a lively spot in town where music plays, and people come to relax on the weekend. ‘I’m now a popular girl,’ she says, smiling.’ I’m confident and I love my work’

Millicent earns a steady income and often receives tips, food, and drinks from satisfied customers.

She’s proud of the independence she’s built. ‘It’s changed me a lot,’ she says. ‘I have achieved my dreams.’

Our brilliant local social workers and mentors are central to helping young mothers believe in themselves again and overcome the complex barriers they often face as they work towards their goals.

From regular one-to-one mentoring sessions and check-ins at their places of study to weekly group life skills sessions, they are there throughout each young mother’s journey on the project, supporting her to move forward with confidence and drive.
