On Saturday 2nd March 2024, the Society of Social Engineers at Njala University, a group of dedicated students who are committed to making a positive impact on society, joined forces with the Bo City Council to clean up Bo City, starting with the Kandeh Town Market.
They were armed with gloves, trash bags, and a determination to make a difference, you dive into the task at hand.
Students who identify themselves as social engineers work tirelessly to pick up litter, sweep the streets, and beautify the market area.
The sun beats down on them as they sweat and toil, but the sense of camaraderie and shared purpose keeps them going. They smiled and shared words of encouragement with those around them, forging connections and friendships that transcend social barriers.
As they clean around the market, they reflect on the impact on their efforts. By cleaning up the market, they did not just remove trash and debris - but send a message to the community that they care and that they are investing in the well-being of Bo City through environmental sustainability.
During the cleaning up of the market, Hon. Yusuf Markey, the Parliamentary Chairman on Climate Change, visited them and made a gesture of three hundred Leones (Le 300) for the society, and as well expressed his commitments to further working with the society in ensuring Climate resilience and adaptation.
The President of the Society, Amb Abdul Wahab Razack appreciated the gesture provided by Honourable. In expressing their commitments as a society, he mentioned that they are a student-led departmental organization focused on research, community development initiatives, volunteerism, environmental sustainability, cultural heritage management and preservation, and among other areas of interventions.
He added that they're open to collaboration, networking, partnerships and sponsorship for all their community initiatives.
The President also engaged with the Deputy Mayor of the Bo City Council, Mrs Hawa Campbell, in ameliorating the effects of environmental pollution in the market as well as the unavailability of waste disposals which has resulted in an increase in high garbage or dust bin within the market place.
The Deputy Mayor expressed their commitments as a Council over time to solving the problem faced by KANDEH TOWN MARKET women but the community has been using the market place as the only dust bin which has been very challenging for them as an institution and they are looking for a practical implementation that will help to savage the situation, as done in some other market place.
As change agents, the President expressed his concerns for the well-being of market women at the KANDEH TOWN MARKET while engaging the Waste Management Manager of the Bo City Council, Mr. Navi, regards what he referred to as poor Waste Management in the KANDEH TOWN MARKETPLACE. He mentioned that an immediate strategy is needed to remove the dusk bin from the market place in assuring the well being of the market women.
The Climate Ambassador, Augustine Justice Bindi responding to the media expressed that the KANDEH TOWN MARKET deserves a sustainable and clean environment where local women will sell their products and customers will buy the goods in a healthier environment. He appreciated members of the Society of Social Engineers Njala University who left their busy schedules to volunteer in joining forces with the Bo City Council to clean the KANDEH TOWN MARKET. He sent words of encouragement to other members who were not present for the cleaning exercise to join the society in subsequent community development initiatives.
The Society has shown that with volunteerism, determination, collaboration, teamwork, and a shared vision, anything is possible. And as you walk away from the market, your heart full and your spirit uplifted, you will know that this is just the beginning, as there are more to their contributions to societal developments.
The Society of Social Engineers will continue to work towards a better, healthier, cleaner, and more unified Bo City - one step at a time.
