Basic Humane Education and animal welfare through an hour radio broadcast held on 6th April 2026 at the KISS FM radio station one of the renowned community radio stations in Bo Sierra Leone.

In continuation of our AWI funded Humane Education activities in the Bo and Moyamba Districts Southern province of Sierra Leone, CCA- SL in collaboration with community stakeholders today 30th March 2026, organized a day training workshop on Basic Humane Education and Animal Welfare. The said training targeted twenty participants constituting CCA- SL volunteers and community volunteers including teachers, religious representatives, the media and school children. The objective of the training was to provide basic knowledge suitable for schools programs, community engagements and general awareness raising. Major topics covered included: the definition of animal welfare, the foundation of animal welfare( the 5 welfare needs), definition of humane education, its relevance importance and community action required to foster humane education etc.
Discussions were held around emerging animal welfare issues( pet eating, animal abuse/ neglect, brutal killings, ritual sacrifices etc) in communities. Recommendations proferred include: the practice of responsible animal ownership/care, continued awareness raising, passing of anti- cruelty bylaws, inclusion of animal welfare education in school curriculum amongst others. The formulation of WhatsApp group was strongly recommended as it provides the platform to champion animal welfare/ humane education issues in communities.
