Today, Sunrise Movement Sierra Leone continued the implementation of the Eco Champion Project: Trash 2 Cash by successfully establishing the first “EcoRise Green Hub” at Kulafaai Rashideen Islamic Secondary School, engaging over 100 pupils and teachers in practical climate action and sustainable waste management activities.

As part of today’s activities, waste bins were distributed across the school and pupils were organised into three environmental action groups:

♻️ Organic Waste Management Group
♻️ Plastic Waste Management Group
♻️ Paper Waste Management Group

Each group was assigned responsibility for managing and sorting specific categories of waste within the school environment. This practical system is helping pupils understand the importance of waste segregation, environmental responsibility, teamwork, and sustainable living from an early age.

To strengthen sustainability and long-term ownership, teachers were actively engaged and entrusted with supervising the student leadership structure and overall management of the EcoRise Green Hub. Beyond waste collection, the Green Hub will also lead tree planting activities and community climate education through interactive play-based learning methods designed to engage other pupils and young people within surrounding communities.

The day featured circle play games, waste sorting demonstrations, and climate education sessions that made environmental learning practical, engaging, and action-oriented.

Through the Eco Champion Project, we are building cleaner schools, empowering young environmental leaders, and creating sustainable community-driven climate solutions in Sierra Leone.

Together, we are turning waste into opportunity.

This documentary captures the lived reality of children in Lalehun, Penguia Chiefdom, where generations have grown up without electricity and learning often ended the moment darkness arrived.

From children studying under dim traditional lamps to the emotional moment classrooms were illuminated for the very first time, the story reflects the human impact of energy poverty and the transformative power of access, dignity, and opportunity.

The documentary follows the implementation of the Lalehun Solar Energy Initiative by Sunrise Movement Sierra Leone, supported by the European Union and Global Youth Mobilisation through the Youth Empowerment Fund, bringing light to the community’s only primary and secondary schools and creating new possibilities for hundreds of children.

These pictures show the exact reality many children in Lalehun have lived through for generations, studying under dim traditional lamps in a community without electricity. The poor lighting and smoke often affected their eyes, limited learning after sunset, and made education incredibly difficult for many children.

And when the lights came on, the children erupted with joy.

The excitement in the classroom was unforgettable. Smiles, laughter, and disbelief filled the room as many experienced electric light in a classroom for the very first time.

In a community where electricity had never existed in living memory, this was more than a switch turning on. It was a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when underserved children are finally given access to opportunity, dignity, and hope.

Across Penguia Chiefdom in Kailahun District, entire communities continue to live without electricity. For many children, education has always been limited to daylight hours because once the sun sets, learning stops. Lalehun was one of those communities.

Today, Sunrise Movement Sierra Leone is proud to share the successful completion and activation of the solar installation at the only primary and secondary schools in Lalehun through the Lalehun Solar Energy Initiative, supported by the European Union and Global Youth Mobilisation through the Youth Empowerment Fund.

For the first time, students now have access to reliable lighting for evening study, safer learning spaces, and improved educational conditions. The response from children and teachers has been deeply moving. Many students shared how they previously relied on dim traditional lamps or stopped studying entirely after school because there was no electricity at home or anywhere within the community.

This initiative demonstrates how decentralised clean energy can strengthen education equity, youth empowerment, and community resilience across underserved rural communities.

Lalehun is only the beginning. Across Penguia Chiefdom, thousands of children are still learning without electricity. The success of this model demonstrates the potential for scalable, community-led clean energy solutions that can expand educational access across underserved communities.
