From Small Workshop to Growing Business: Ansu's Story

Before connecting with GIZ, Ansu ran a small carpentry workshop with great potential, but lacking the structure needed for growth. However, through a six-month entrepreneurship training programme supported by GIZ, he gained the necessary skills and tools to take his business to the next level.

Today, his workshop is thriving. He employs 15 people and produces a wide range of furniture, including sofa chairs, beds, and school benches for local schools. His products reach customers across Makeni, Kono and Freetown, with raw materials sourced locally in Makeni.

When asked what made the biggest difference, Ansu's answer is clear: “The record keeping.” While GIZ also provided equipment, it was learning how to track his finances and business operations that truly transformed the way he runs his business.

And he's not stopping there. Ansu's vision is to build a large-scale furniture industry that employs many people and produces furniture on a large scale. His next step? Securing a bigger plot of land for storage and new machinery.

“The support from GIZ has made me who I am today” A successful Poultry Farmer.

Meet Edamit Aminata a determined poultry farmer, who began her business in 2017, after discovering the income opportunities poultry farming could create for women in her community. Despite her determination, she faced difficulties in the early stage of her business, with limited knowledge, resources, and infrastructure, growing her business was a constant struggle.

Her transformation began when she participated in a specialized training organized by Employment Promotion Programme, this training helped in transforming her business, through this training she learned about modern poultry management and gained confidence and knowledge on how to improve her farm, after the training she also received a grant. With this support, Edamit was able to build a proper poultry house and expanded her production capacity to 1,000 chickens. She is now planning to open a larger facility that will hold up to 2,000 birds.

Currently, she supplies eggs to households, market vendors, and supermarkets across Makeni and nearby communities. Demand remains higher than her current supply. Her business has also created four jobs for people in her community.

Looking ahead, Edamit hopes to expand her business to Freetown and beyond within the next five years.

Transforming raw cocoa into premium chocolate🍫

Driven by determination to grow and innovate, 11 participants from three MSMEs, Gola Rainforest Conservation, Lizard Earth, and Capitol Foods, have successfully completed an intensive Bean-to-Bar Chocolate Production Training.

This hands-on training equipped participants with advanced technical and entrepreneurial skills essential for producing high-quality chocolate. From flavor development and sensory analysis to HACCP awareness, roasting, cracking and winnowing, and tempering, each step gave them the knowledge on how to transform raw cocoa into premium products.

Today, these women are not only more skilled, but more confident in applying improved production techniques. This training will help MSMEs to enhance their product quality, access higher-value markets, and strengthen their role within Sierra Leone’s cocoa value chain.

The trainings was organized by the Ecological and Economic Transformation of Value Chains (EET) Project, funded by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) with co-funding from the European Union in Sierra Leone and implemented by GIZ.

This milestone reflects what is possible when women are empowered with the right skills and opportunities, driving sustainable growth.

Sustainable Energy for Strong Institutions

GIZ handed over a 5.4 kW solar PV system to the Office of Precious Minerals (OPM) under the of Mines and Energy in Liberia. ⚡💎

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Daniela Weber, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, and Acting Deputy Minister of Energy, Mr. Oliver Gbegbe, highlighted the long-standing cooperation between Germany and Liberia in the energy and mining sectors.

The system, which powered the Energising Development (EnDev) project office from 2019 to 2024, has now found a new destination at the office in charge of a critical task: evaluating the quality of diamonds and gold, increasing governmental revenue and strengthening the traceability of Liberian diamonds.

The joint handover by the EnDev and Resource Governance (ReGo) programmes reflects GIZ's commitment to linking sustainable energy solutions with good resource governance, ensuring that infrastructure continues to deliver value beyond individual projects. ☀️

🌍 World Health Day 2026 – “Together for Health. Stand with Science.”

In recognition of World Health, we highlight the importance of strong health systems and a well-equipped workforce in delivering quality care for all.

The Health System Strengthening and Epidemic Prevention (HSSEP III) project marks a key milestone with the launch of a Unified In-Service Training Plan aimed at strengthening frontline health capacity across Kambia, Kailahun, and Pujehun districts. This achievement reflects strong collaboration with national and district health partners and reinforces our commitment to building a resilient, people-centered health system.

The plan includes a comprehensive Training Needs Assessment and implementation roadmap, setting a benchmark for improving epidemic preparedness and service delivery in health facilities. Through this initiative, health workers will be equipped with advanced skills to enhance the quality of care and contribute to safer, healthier communities.

Implemented by GIZ with and commissioned by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), the HSSEP III project continues to support sustainable health systems and impactful partnerships in Sierra Leone.

Bintu Swaray is a talented hairdresser and single mother who has long used her skills to provide for her child and built a strong reputation for herself in her community. For years, she worked with outdated tools, limited materials, and she didn’t have the funds needed to grow her business.

Everything changed when she received support through GIZ’s Job and Business Centre, giving her the opportunity to turn her skills into a fully independent business.

“With this support, I was able to set up and operate my business, Anfred Hairdressing Salon, with the essential equipment I needed to work professionally, turning my dream into a reality.”

Bintu also participated in training sessions where she learned how to manage her income and expenses and gained understanding of the steps required to start and sustain a small business.

Looking ahead, Bintu hopes to continue growing her salon and serve as an example to other women who lack opportunities.

The support was provided under the Employment Promotion Programme (EPP), implemented by GIZ, commissioned by the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), and co-financed by the European Union in Sierra Leone.

Shaping West Africa’s digital future together

This week in Freetown, Ministers in charge of Telecommunications, ICT, and Digitalisation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened in Freetown, Sierra Leone, for their 20th Ministerial Meeting, marking an important step forward in advancing the region’s digital agenda.

At a time when digital transformation is accelerating, the Ministers deliberated on and adopted further to the head of states’ approval of key regional instruments and strategic priorities as proposed by the regional experts, reinforcing ECOWAS’ commitment to a harmonised and secure digital ecosystem across West Africa.

The strategies and discussions would strengthen telecommunications infrastructure and align ICT policies, thereby paving the way for harmonised approaches that will drive regional integration and digital trade across West Africa.

Through the Data Governance in Africa Initiative, implemented by GIZ with support from the European Union and
Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), we are proud to contribute to this process.

A key milestone is the ongoing work on the adoption of the revised Supplementary Act on Personal Data Protection, which is a critical step to strengthen trust, enable secure cross-border data flows, and unlock the region’s digital potential.

As West Africa moves forward, aligning policy, infrastructure, and governance will be essential to ensure that digital transformation is inclusive, secure, and economically impactful.

"It's awesome"

Wesley Sumowelt didn't hesitate when asked what he thinks of Gateway Vocational Training Center. His eyes grew wide: "It's awesome," he said - and then repeated it again with emphasis, just to be sure the point landed.

Wesley is a third-year plumbing student at GVTC in Bentol City, and his motivation is straightforward: "I wanted to help myself and by that help my country develop." In a country where skilled tradespeople are in short supply and vocational training can be expensive and inconsistent, GVTC offers something different. Students like Wesley don't just sit in classrooms - they alternate six months of hands-on institutional training with six-month placements at established partner companies, gaining real workplace experience before they graduate.

What Wesley loves most: the quality of instruction, how students are treated with respect, and that all training materials, from toolboxes to safety boots, are provided without hidden costs - a rare promise in Liberia's TVET landscape.

Established in 2021, GVTC set out to address Liberia's construction sector skills gap by creating a new model: industry-driven, competency-based training delivered by a private-sector-owned institution operating as a non-profit.

Wesley and his classmates represent that vision coming to life - young Liberians equipped with the skills, confidence, and work experience to build their country's future. 🔧🇱🇷

The "Support to Demand-Driven Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for Young People in Liberia" Project was co-financed by the European Union in Sierra Leone and Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) and implemented by the GIZ.

Lucian Nallo turned a personal need into a thriving business.

What began as small-scale home production has grown into Angelus Plantain Benny Mix, a locally produced baby food brand now sold across Sierra Leone.

A significant transformation happened when Lucian received a grant from GIZ, enabling her to register her business and invest in equipment like a multipurpose grinder and cooking pots, reducing manual labour and increasing efficiency. She also attended trainings in entrepreneurship, branding, and basic accounting, helping her structure her business and position her product in the market.

Today, Angelus Plantain Benny Mix is sold in Bo, Freetown, Makeni, and other cities. Using locally sourced ingredients such as beans, plantain, dried fish, and sesame, Lucian produces twice a month and offers different package sizes, with the smallest priced at 30 NLe, making nutritious baby food accessible to many families.

Her business has created nine jobs, supporting young people and local livelihoods. The income also helps Lucian support her family, including her son who inspired the idea, he is now nine years old.

Looking ahead, Lucian plans to modernise production further, exploring solutions like solar energy to address electricity challenges, and aims to expand business to neighbouring countries like Liberia and Guinea, creating more jobs.

The support was provided under the Employment Promotion Programme (EPP), implemented by GIZ, commissioned by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), and co-financed by the European Union in Sierra Leone.
