Slovak Wildlife Society

Slovak Wildlife Society Research, education and coexistence with wildlife in Slovakia. We are a charitable organization focused primarily on wolves, bears and lynx.

Founded in 1998 and registered as an associaton of citizens since 2005. The Slovak Wildlife Society (SWS) is a not-for-profit organisation specialising in carnivores including wolves, bears and lynx. Our goal is to foster greater understanding and acceptance of native predators through reducing conflicts with human interests. Our scientific research provides authorities with a sound basis for mana

gement decisions as well as contributing information to education and awareness campaigns, in which we are also very active. We also provide expert knowledge and assistance to local communities in implementing non-lethal measures to reduce conflicts such as livestock guarding dogs, electric fences and bear-proof bins. The involvement of local people has been integral to our work since our establishment in 1998. We work with volunteers and provide practical and financial help for those most affected by carnivores. We also operate one of the longest-running wildlife tourism programmes in Slovakia, benefiting people and wildlife since 2000. We are active members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Association for Bear Research and Management (IBA), the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) and the Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe (LCIE). This week, the Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe (LCIE) and the International Association for Bear Research & Management (IBA), with our assistance, jointly issued an open letter addressing critical concerns over the recent management policies for brown bears in . 🐻📄
In recent months, there has been an uptick in reports of bear encounters near human settlements and related conflicts. While the LCIE and IBA understand the challenges this poses, we believe that effective management must be rooted in evidence-based, adaptive strategies. The letter emphasises the importance of aligning bear management approaches with EU legislation and calls for thorough assessment and transparent, science-backed responses to these complex issues.
In particular, we urge Slovak authorities to prioritise non-lethal mitigation measures, increase public education on bear safety and foster inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders. The collective goal is to ensure the long-term conservation of this iconic species while maintaining the safety and well-being of local communities. 🤝🌍

Rozhovor so mnou o medveďoch a nedávnych udalostiach na Slovensku.
