When Noise Was Protection 🔔🇸🇰

In traditional Slovak culture, noise was sometimes believed to have a protective power. Shouting, ringing bells, cracking whips, blowing horns, rattling, and singing were used during seasonal customs and important moments when harmful forces were thought to be especially active.

These sounds were meant to drive danger away and were associated with protection, health, fertility, and prosperity. Over time, the original beliefs faded, but many of the noisy traditions remained part of Slovak folk culture.

It is a fascinating reminder that even the loudest customs can carry very old meanings.

👏 Thank you to for sharing this glimpse into Slovak folklore and tradition.

The Slovak Artist Who Survived Auschwitz

Born into a Jewish family in Košice in 1904, Ľudovít Feld stopped growing at the age of eight due to a rare disorder. Despite standing barely over a meter tall, he became one of Slovakia's most gifted artists, studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest before opening his own art school in Košice.

Then came 1944.

Although Feld had been left off the deportation list, reportedly by a former student who wanted to save him, he refused to abandon his family. Instead, he voluntarily joined them on the transport to Auschwitz.

Almost twenty members of his family were murdered there.

His remarkable artistic talent, however, caught the attention of Dr. Josef Mengele, the notorious "Angel of Death." Feld was forced to become Mengele's personal artist, drawing portraits of N**i officers and documenting prisoners with physical and mental disabilities for Mengele's pseudoscientific experiments.

The work he was forced to do almost certainly saved his own life.

Yet even in the midst of unimaginable horror, Feld never stopped helping others.
Near the end of the war, as the N**is began evacuating Auschwitz and killing the remaining prisoners, Feld persuaded the fifteen children living in his barracks not to answer the morning roll call. Instead, they hid together beneath the wooden bunks for ten days and nights in freezing conditions, with almost no food.

All fifteen children survived.

Decades later, two of those children returned to Košice to thank the man who had saved their lives.

After their emotional reunion, Feld quietly said:

"Now I can die."

After the war, Feld returned to his beloved Košice, where he continued painting, teaching, and inspiring young artists. Today, he is remembered not only as one of Slovakia's finest graphic artists, but as a man whose courage, compassion, and humanity endured even in history's darkest hour.

Sometimes the greatest heroes are not the tallest or the strongest, but those with the biggest hearts.

The Jewish Fighters Who Defended the Streets of Bratislava

Long before the Second World War engulfed Europe, antisemitic violence was already spreading through the streets of Bratislava.

But not everyone was prepared to stand by.

One of those who fought back was Dávid “Dufi” Unreich, a young Jewish wrestler who had once studied at Bratislava’s famous yeshiva, training to become a rabbi. Instead, he chose a very different path.

Together with Imi Lichtenfeld, the future founder of Krav Maga, he organized Jewish self-defence groups to protect their community from fascist and N**i attacks.

When members of the Slovak Hlinka Guard and the N**i-aligned Freiwillige Schutzstaffel terrorized the city’s streets and trams, Dufi and Imi fought back. They became known in Bratislava for defending Jewish residents and refusing to surrender their community to fear.

As the N**i threat intensified, Dufi escaped to the United States. Wrestling under the names Ben Shalom and later David Vance to protect his family back home, he built an extraordinary career in the ring, winning 100 consecutive matches without defeat.

At the height of his fame, he issued an extraordinary public challenge to Adolf Hi**er himself, inviting the dictator to face him in the wrestling ring. Before photographers, he even demonstrated exactly what he would do to both Hi**er and his copy of Mein Kampf.

While Dufi found safety in America, tragedy struck at home. In 1944, his parents and sister were deported from Bratislava to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where they were murdered.

Imi Lichtenfeld escaped to Palestine, where he later became a leading instructor in hand-to-hand combat. The self-defence system he developed — Krav Maga — would eventually spread around the world.

Two young men from Bratislava.

One became an extraordinary wrestling champion. The other created one of the world’s most influential self-defence systems.

Both proved that courage begins long before the fighting starts.

✨ Did you know…? ✨

Hidden near the village of Dobrá Niva in central Slovakia is a magical oak grove that looks as though it belongs in a fairy tale.

The protected area known as Gavurky contains around 600 majestic oak trees, many of them between 200 and 400 years old. Their enormous trunks, spreading branches and unusual twisted shapes create one of Slovakia’s most atmospheric natural landscapes.

Gavurky is a surviving example of a traditional pasture woodland. Animals once grazed beneath the widely spaced trees, helping create an open habitat that supports rare plants, insects, birds and other wildlife.

Today, this remarkable grove attracts not only visitors and photographers but also researchers interested in its ancient trees and exceptional biodiversity.

🌳 Place: Gavurky oak grove
📍 Location: Near Dobrá Niva, central Slovakia
🌿 Focus: Ancient trees, biodiversity and traditional landscapes
✨ Uniqueness: Around 600 centuries-old oaks create a landscape that looks like something from a Slovak fairy tale

The Slovak National Uprising did more than challenge the wartime regime. It also helped place Slovaks on the side of the victors at the end of World War II, paving the way for the restoration of Czechoslovakia.

Yet the Uprising remains one of the most debated events in Slovak history. Its meaning, legacy, and place in national memory still spark controversy today — which is exactly why it remains such an important part of understanding modern Slovakia.
