Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to the 12th Bratislava Maya Meetings, taking place at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University Bratislava, May 28–30, 2026.
This year's conference, "Between Flesh and Cosmos: Body, Disease, and Divinity in Mesoamerica" (May 30, 2026), brings together scholars from archaeology, epigraphy, history, anthropology, and related fields to explore how Mesoamerican cultures understood the human body, illness, and healing — and how these concepts were embedded in cosmological, ritual, and social frameworks.
We welcome paper proposals addressing topics including but not limited to:

- The body in Maya and Aztec iconography and texts
- Disease, healing, and medical knowledge in ancient and colonial Mesoamerica
- Ritual and religious dimensions of illness and bodily transformation
- Comparative perspectives across Mesoamerican cultures and time periods

WORKSHOP (May 28–29, 2026)
The conference will include a workshop led by Harri Kettunen and John Chuchiak:
"Animating Illness: Wahy Creatures and Disease Etiology in Maya Thought from Precolumbian to Colonial Times"

SYMPOSIUM (May 30, 2026)
Open paper sessions on the conference theme.

Archeologický projekt Proyecto Arqueológico Regional Uaxactun (PARU) realizovaný tímom slovenských, guatemalských a českých odborníkov v Guatemale bol ocenený ako najvýznamnejší čin roka 2025 v oblasti "umenia a kultúry" významným guatemalským periodikom Prensa Libre. Projekt počas svojej 16ročnej existencie priniesol už množstvo objavov a nálezov. V sezóne 2023 - 2025 to bol napríklad dôležitý objav nového mayského mesta Los Abuelos. GRATULUJEME! 👏👏👏

Workshop pre začiatočníkov od 25. do 27. novembra 2025 počas European Maya Conference účastníkom predstaví základy mayského hieroglyfického písma, štruktúry textu ako aj kalendárnych údajov uvádzaných na mayských monumentoch či iných predmetoch. Stále sa môžete prihlásiť na linku dole ⬇️ Workshop bude vedený v anglickom a slovenskom jazyku.

Beginners Workshop: Introduction to Maya Glyphs and Calendars
Bratislava • 25–27 November 2025

This workshop offers a clear and accessible introduction to Maya hieroglyphic writing and the Maya calendar.
Participants will learn how the writing system is structured and how the Long Count, Tzolk’in, and Haab calendars interlock to record time, history, and ritual events.

Through practical exercises, we will practice:
• reading basic glyphs
• calculating distance numbers
• understanding how calendar cycles shaped Maya historical and religious narratives

Open to complete beginners.
No prior experience needed.

Instruction language: The workshop will be conducted in English, but individual explanations will also be available in Slovak and Spanish.

Podujatie European Maya Conference sa už blíži. Ešte stále prebieha online registrácia na workshopy a sympózium. ⬇️ Zaujímavý je nielen pozývací plagát ale hlavne program. Veríme, že sa od 24. do 29.11. stretneme na 30. ročníku tejto významnej mayskej konferencie.

IT'S ALMOST TIME! (literally)⏳

The 30th Annual European Maya Conference is organized by Wayeb – the European Association of Mayanists – in cooperation with the Center for Mesoamerican Studies, Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava. The conference will begin with an introductory lecture on the evening of Monday 24th November, followed by three days of workshops (25th-27th November), and concluding with a two-day symposium held from Friday 28th November to Saturday 29th November 2025.

The theme for the 30th European Maya Conference is TIME IN MESOAMERICA. The topic will be explored from a variety of perspectives.
