Although Slovakia’s GDP per capita as a percentage of the EU average has remained relatively stable, its convergence with the EU average has been slower compared to its neighbors.

🔎 What will be Slovakia’s next competitive advantage? 🇸🇰 🚀

"There are two areas Slovakia should focus on: firstly, we need to increase the quality and quantity of tech education in the country. We need more IT specialists who can meet the increasing demands of the labor market and special emphasis should be put on women and their potential careers in the tech sector.

Secondly, while tech education is absolutely essential, we need to go well beyond hard IT skills. We need graduates with strong critical thinking, creativity, collaborative and problem solving skills. These graduates can come from any field and with these skills they can substantially contribute to making Slovakia more competitive."

In 2024, data from the Investment Literacy Index in Slovakia showed that 72.9% of women lacked confidence in investment matters, compared to 59.6% of men. Women's investment knowledge was also lower, with their index at 82.5, while men scored 106.5. (https://rozumieminvesticiam.sk/) 💰

❝Investing is a key tool for protecting and growing finances, but Slovak women engage in it less actively than men. The reason is not only their lower confidence in financial matters, but also a different approach to risk and investment decisions.

If women invested at the same rate as men, it could lead to a significant increase in the amount of capital on financial markets. However, it is necessary to support their financial literacy and confidence to achieve this. Women's investment potential is large, and greater utilization of it could have a positive impact not only for women themselves but also for the entire economy.❞

📊 Competitive Slovakia: Data Insights and Trends 🔍

In the recently released 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) by Transparency International, Slovakia has dropped to 49 points out of 100, landing at the 59th spot in the global ranking. This represents a decline of 5 points and a 12-spot drop compared to 2023. The decline has been attributed to reforms that have weakened anti-corruption safeguards and bypassed public consultation.

AmCham Slovakia has been actively monitoring this issue through its Rule of Law Initiative (Iniciatíva za právny štát), which brings together 14 major business and employers' associations, as well as chambers of commerce. We believe that the rule of law, a transparent, predictable legislative process, and a fair justice system are fundamental to creating a healthy, attractive business environment—and, ultimately, a competitive country.⚖️

We view these results with concern. The Rule of Law Initiative will continue to voice the unified stance of the business community, calling for significant improvements in these areas.

🤝 At AmCham Slovakia, we deeply value our Patron Members and their continued support. As a small token of appreciation, we enjoyed an excellent lunch in wonderful company at this year’s Patron’s Luncheon.🙏🏻🍽️

We were honored by the presence of three distinguished guests:

Pavol Šajgalík, President of the Slovenská akadémia vied / Slovak Academy of Sciences, and Martin Venhart, newly elected President of the Academy, who shared their vision for Slovakia's innovation and R&D future
Maria Bielikova, Director-Genral of Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies, a leading figure in the Slovak innovation ecosystem, recognized for her significant contributions to artificial intelligence and bridging academia and industry.

This event highlighted the promising potential for closer cooperation between the business and scientific communities, with many positive takeaways. A key message was clear: business needs quality science, and science needs strong business—neither can thrive without the other’s support. Moreover, transforming research into market-ready products must be a priority for Slovakia, aligning with the EU's broader goal of boosting competitiveness. Both the current and future Presidents of the Slovak Academy of Sciences confirmed their commitment to strengthening ties with business leaders to drive this forward.

As we embark on our 2025 journey dedicated to Competitive Slovakia, we emphasize the crucial role of research and development and the need for closer collaboration between business and academia to drive our country’s competitiveness forward. With the support of our incredible membership base and the entire AmCham community, we are excited to work together in driving this vision forward.🚀

📊 Competitive Slovakia: Data Insights and Trends

Did you know that Slovakia's R&D expenditure as a percentage of GDP was 1.16% in 2015 and has declined to 0.79% in 2023? Meanwhile, other CEE countries are seeing the opposite trend, with increasing investments in research and development, and the EU average continues to climb above 2%. 🇪🇺

🔍 In comparison:

• Austria: 3.26%

• Czechia: 1.83%

• Poland: 1.56%

If Slovakia wants to stay competitive and foster innovation, it must reverse this trend by increasing investment in research and development! 🚀🔬

In the digital age, innovation and R&D are fundamental to driving economic growth, enhancing productivity, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies. It’s how we create new products, attract investment, and secure high-quality jobs.

To remain competitive, Slovakia should prioritize R&D investments, aiming for the EU target of 3% of GDP - this target was identified as a priority by both Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020. It is essential for driving sustainable economic growth and ensuring a prosperous future for Europe in the digital era. 💡🌍

That is why innovation will be one of the main topics of AmCham Slovakia's upcoming Competitive Slovakia Conference in May, and it is also the focus of the upcoming issue of our Connection magazine!
