Pred niekoľkými týždňami sme mali tú česť usporiadať náš workshop „Ako strategicky pracovať s polarizáciou“ na Britskom veľvyslanectve v Bratislave.
Nebolo to však len bežné podujatie Britského veľvyslanectva. Ukázalo skutočné odhodlanie venovať sa tejto téme, keďže spojilo zamestnancov veľvyslanectva a predstaviteľov veľvyslanectiev Spojených štátov, Kanady, Írska, Nemecka a Švajčiarska, či Zastúpenia EÚ na Slovesnku. Bol to priestor, ktorý odrážal zdieľanú prioritu medzinárodných partnerov posilňovať schopnosť pracovať konštruktívne s polarizáciou v čoraz fragmentovanejšom svete.
Boli sme tiež poctení prítomnosťou nového britského veľvyslanca, Bila Zahida, ktorý jasne a presvedčivo vyjadril svoje odhodlanie tejto téme venovať pozornosť.
Diskusie boli bohaté a podnetné – skúmali, čo znamená diplomatické líderstvo v prostredí poznačenom polarizáciou. Ústrednou témou bolo zdôraznenie prístupu „lídera stredu“, teda tých, ktorí sa nachádzajú v strede polarizovaného spektra. Tento prístup presahuje tradičnú predstavu „budovania mostov“ medzi pólmi a zdôrazňuje skôr budovanie vzťahov a priestorov v strede, v ktorých môžu vznikať hlbšie a udržateľnejšie riešenia.
Medzi ďalšie kľúčové myšlienky patrilo:
- potreba systematického rozvoja zručností pre prácu s polarizáciou
- význam podporných komunít praxe medzi „lídrami stredu“,
- dôležitosť koordinácie na medzinárodnej aj lokálnej úrovni.
Uplatňovanie týchto strategických prístupov je kľúčové pre posilňovanie demokratickej odolnosti – a to tak v diplomatickej sfére, ako aj v miestnych komunitách.
V skutočnosti myšlienka zapojiť diplomatov do tohto typu tréningu vznikla priamo z lokálnej práce v Banskej Bystrici, kde mesto spustilo sériu workshopov o strategickej práci s polarizáciou v rámci iniciatívy Agenti koexistencie. Keďže lokálna polarizácia často odzrkadľuje širšie geopolitické napätia, postupne sa do workshopov zapájali aj aktéri z národnej úrovne a členovia diplomatických služieb.
Ďakujeme všetkým, ktorí sa zúčastnili — za otvorenosť, príspevky a spoločné úsilie venovať sa tejto dôležitej práci.
A few weeks ago, we had the privilege of hosting our workshop “How to Work Strategically with Polarisation” at the British Embassy in Bratislava.
This was far more than a standard embassy event. It demonstrated a real commitment to the topic, bringing together the Embassy’s own staff along with representatives from the embassies of the United States, Canada, Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland as well as from the Representation of the EU in Slovakia.
It was a truly collaborative effort, reflecting a shared priority among international partners to strengthen our ability to work constructively with polarisation in an increasingly fragmented world.
We were also honoured by the presence of the new British Ambassador, Bila Zahid, who expressed a clear and compelling dedication to addressing this issue.
The discussions were rich and insightful, exploring what diplomatic leadership means in a polarised environment. A central theme was the importance of the “leader of the middle” approach—emphasizing active listening and an inviting, grounded presence among those holding the middle ground. This goes beyond the traditional idea of simply “building bridges” between opposing sides and instead highlights cultivating relationships and spaces where deeper and more sustainable solutions can emerge.
Other key points included: the need for systematic skill-building in working with polarisation, the value of supportive communities of practice among “leaders of the middle”, and the importance of coordination across international and local levels.
Applying these strategic insights is vital for strengthening democratic resilience—both within diplomacy and in local communities. In fact, the idea to involve diplomats in this training first emerged from local-level work in Banská Bystrica, where the city launched a series of workshops on working strategically with polarisation as part of the Agenti Koexistencie initiative.
As local polarisation often reflects wider geopolitical tensions, national-level public actors and members of the diplomatic service gradually became involved as well.
