Telling Stories, Reclaiming Peace

We have just held the design and kick-off meeting for our new initiative, connecting young people and women of all backgrounds in Slovenia with peers in Syria through art and storytelling.

In the coming months, we will host a series of free creative workshops, inviting participants to join a collective journey exploring what peace means. Through performative and visual arts, we will create a collective understanding of peace, which will later be transformed into short films.

The workshops are open to youth and women from all backgrounds living in Slovenia.

For more information, to join us, or to cooperate with us, get in touch at [email protected].

This initiative is led by Reka Si, a diasporic organization for research and the arts founded and led by migrant women artists and researchers from the SWANA region. It is part of Connect For Global Change SLOGA, platforma NVO za razvoj, globalno učenje in humanitarno pomoč.

We launched the first session of our online participatory training, Centering People, Creating Knowledge, focused on Participatory Action Research (PAR) and ethical, meaningful partnerships between academia, communities, and civil society organizations.

At Reka Si Research and Art Institute, we designed this training for communities and researchers using experiential learning methods to unpack what PAR means in practice and to critically reflect on ethics, integrity, methodologies of knowledge production, and the iterative action–reflection cycle.

We are inspired and amazed by the meaningful work of the partners, practitioners, and participants we had the chance to meet and exchange with today around PAR practices and experiences.

We launched this training through the Anna Lindh Foundation Hands-On Programme, bringing together facilitators, action researchers, practitioner-researchers, community co-researchers, and activists based in Jordan, Slovenia, Greece, Portugal, Georgia, Morocco, Egypt, and beyond.

The training consists of 6 hours divided across three sessions.

If you would like to host our experiential training and strengthen bridges between academia and community work towards more equal and just societies for all, do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Gender inequality, as a systemic and structural issue, intertwines with racialization and produces forms of gendered racism that harm societies in many ways. In other words, we cannot combat racism without gender equality as a principle, approach, goal, and instrument.

This was the central theme of our contribution, where we shared concrete activities, practices, and policy recommendations developed through our womxn-to-womxn intercultural forces at Reka Si.

We presented our work during the MARIO Summit and the launch of its study in Brussels, organized by Minority Rights Group.

The MARIO programme (Minority, Accountability, Rights, Independence, and Organisational Development) brought together 90 minority-led organizations over the past four years.

Sharing power, knowledge, and expertise to build more just, inclusive, and equal societies for all.

Explore our MARIO journey, where 90 minority organizations across Europe have created valuable, research-based knowledge and practices for societies striving for peace, justice, and equality for all.

At the MARIO evaluation meeting today in Brussels, we kicked off the day with Vanessa Kabuta from the DG JUST Europe announcing the upcoming call for expressions of interest to join the EU Civil Society Forum on Anti-Racism.

Stay connected, stay informed, and get engaged. Anti-racism is a collective act of liberation, your voice and presence matter.

Funding is an investment! especially when it is grassroots, centers on intersectionality, and is grounded in the values of gender equality.

It is remarkable how community stories and narratives can naturally turn into policy advocacy.

Last year at Reka Si, we launched a community initiative, “Womxn to Womxn: Intercultural Forces,” designed and led by 15 Arabic- and Farsi-speaking migrant women living in Slovenia.

Our aim was to create community art and stories that debunk gender- and ethnicity-based stereotypes, while also producing audio-visual materials in Arabic about rights in Slovenia.

Along the way, we realized that the stories we shared were also shaping concrete policy recommendations. Sharing these recommendations in a policy dialogue forum with the EMPL Committee in the European Parliament and the Slovenian Center for the Protection of Social Rights was truly productive.

Thank you to all the people who contributed their expertise, including Rula Hummada, Manar Abed, Behnaz Aliesephahanipour, Muska, Samar Zughool, and many more. Special thanks to SOLIDAR for organizing this forum and for sharing the Social Rights Monitor and the upcoming Migrant Rights Monitor.
