Happy International Day of Caves and Karst!

Today, on September 13, we join the global community in celebrating the hidden wonder of karst landscapes and the vital subterranean habitats that sustain life both above and below ground.

At Tular Cave Laboratory, our mission revolves around three key commitments:

- protecting the Proteus anguinus: more than 65 years we work to study, rescue, and preserve this remarkable species.
- raising awarnes on shared groundwater: karst aquifers provide clean drinking water for millions. Because surface pollution rapidly drains into porous limestone without natural filtering, keeping subterranean environments clean is directly linked to protecting human health.
- educating on karst and its biodiversity: through our SOS proteus Information Center, we bridge the gap between science and the public—raising awareness about the fragile, highly specialized subterranean life.

On September 13, we celebrate the first International Day of Caves and Karst!

A lucky date for all of us to remember our shared responsibility: protecting the rich natural heritage of karst ecosystems and subterranean habitats. Above all, it’s a reminder that we all drink and depend on the same karst groundwater—and it’s up to us to keep it clean for generations to come!

Z veseljem delimo novo znanstveno objavo, pri kateri smo sodelovali Tular Cave Laboratory - Jamski laboratorij Tular

🌿🛰️ Can satellites accurately track forest recovery across complex karst landscapes?

A new study by researchers from the Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU, Fakulteta za računalništvo in informatiko at Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana, and Gozdarski inštitut Slovenije explored how well Sentinel-2 satellite data capture forest canopy development above the Postojna–Planina Cave System.

🌳 The results show that Sentinel-2 successfully tracks seasonal canopy development, but there is a catch: good seasonal agreement does not always mean that satellites can reliably distinguish structural differences between forest stands. This was especially evident in dense post-disturbance regeneration, where high field-measured LAI values were substantially compressed by satellite-based estimates.

🛰️ Sentinel-2 is a valuable tool for monitoring forest phenology and vegetation recovery, but understanding complex, heterogeneous forests requires satellite observations to be complemented with on-the-ground forest structure data.

Tular Cave Lab at BEeS 2026!
As partners in LifeWatch Slovenia, Magdalena and Gregor Aljančič represented the Tular Cave Laboratory at the LifeWatch ERIC BEeS 2026 conference in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

The meeting is organised by Jamarska reševalna služba on behalf of the European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA).

Pod starim mestnim središčem Kranja je v delu podzemnih rovov urejen tudi Informacijski center SOS Proteus. Z ogledi želijo čim manj vplivati na ogrožene človeške ribice, zato vpliv obiska skrbno spremljajo.
