💬 Lo**ta Saras, co-founder of Across Species Project Indonesia (ASPI), came into the programme without a clear direction: "I didn't even have a fixed plan on which issue, on what to work on — and then we learned about the research that Welfare Matters provided, and then we also did our own research."

💬 Shreya Basu, co-founder of Sentient Animals Vietnam (SAV) , found that the programme's structure did something most training programmes don't: "It gave me a lot of opportunities to work with different people — not just meet them, not just talk to them, but actually work on real tasks with them."

FAWI is a fully funded, 12-week programme supporting individuals in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to build impactful initiatives focused on layer hen and farmed fish welfare.

Incubatees receive:

The Farmed Animal Welfare Incubator (FAWI) is a launchpad for the next generation of farmed animal welfare leaders in Southeast Asia. We're looking for individuals who are:
🌟 Driven: highly motivated to reduce farmed animal suffering at scale
🔍 Evidence-based: open to exploring interventions and impactful approaches
🌏 Based in Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam
💼 Entrepreneurial: ready to build something from the ground up

In 2024, FAWI incubated two pioneering new organisations in Southeast Asia. Their founders came in with passion, learned, developed ideas and left with fully functioning organisations, seed funding, and a network of support behind them.

🐔 Start an Impact-Oriented Nonprofit Initiative for Layer Hen Welfare!

This year, FAWI is focusing on two of the most neglected farmed animals in Southeast Asia: fish and layer hens.

Layer hens represent one of the largest sources of farmed animal suffering in Southeast Asia by sheer numbers. The overwhelming majority are kept in barren battery cages with virtually no space to move, nest, perch, or express natural behaviours. Beak trimming without pain relief is routine.

While over 300 Asian companies have made cage-free commitments, these efforts still reach only a small fraction of birds. Targeted interventions combining producer engagement, technical training, and corporate accountability can accelerate adoption and translate pledges into measurable welfare improvements.

Advocates in the region are urgently needed.

🐟 Start an Impact-Oriented Nonprofit Initiative for Farmed Animal Welfare!

This year, FAWI is focusing on two of the most neglected farmed animals in Southeast Asia: fish and layer hens.

Billions of fish are farmed annually across Southeast Asia. Welfare issues are chronic: poor water quality, low oxygen, overcrowding, and inhumane slaughter methods cause continuous suffering. Water quality improvements (dissolved oxygen, ammonia, pH) and reduced stocking densities can make an immediate difference.

Yet fish welfare remains almost entirely overlooked. Advocates in the region are urgently needed.
