Po*******hy Addiction: Myth vs. Fact

Behind every addiction, there's usually a family quietly carrying the weight too. Let's clear up some common misconceptions.

“Everyone watches p**n, so how can it be an addiction?”
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about po*******hy.

The truth is, watching po*******hy does not automatically mean someone has an addiction. The concern begins when po*******hy use becomes difficult to control and starts affecting a person’s relationships, work, finances, emotional wellbeing or daily life.

Here are a few common myths:
MYTH: “If you watch p**n, you’re addicted.”
TRUTH: Frequency alone doesn’t define a problem. Loss of control and negative consequences matter.

MYTH: “Porn addiction isn’t real.”
TRUTH: Compulsive s*xual behaviour can become a serious problem for some individuals and may require professional support.

MYTH: “They can just stop if they really want to.”
TRUTH: For some people, repeated behaviour can become deeply ingrained, making it difficult to stop without understanding the triggers and having the right support.

MYTH: “It only affects the person watching.”
TRUTH: Compulsive po*******hy use can affect intimacy, trust, communication and the wellbeing of partners and family members too.

Have you heard any of these myths before? To families: It's okay to feel hurt or confused. Recovery is possible with the right support — and it starts with understanding.

What Families of People with Addiction Often Feel—but Don't Say

"I'm exhausted."
"I feel guilty."
"I don't know what to do anymore."

Many parents, spouses and siblings spend years worrying, covering up problems, losing sleep and wondering whether they're helping or making things worse.

If this is your story, please know that your feelings are valid—and you don't have to face them alone.

Recovery isn't just for the person struggling with addiction. Families need healing too.

A couple, Mr and Mrs W who are in their 70s has a son who struggles with problem gambling. They tried to help him initially but he did not cut down on his gambling. One day they stopped helping him to pay off his debts and that was when he started to scold them. He had come to expect that they will always pay off his debts. After that, Mrs W began to feel that she is a bad mother.

The above is a true reflection of what can happen when family members try to help their loved one without fully understanding how to help them. Apart from this, family relationship can also break, family finances can decrease significantly and the mental anguish felt by the affected family members can increase as they feel distressed over whether debt collectors will come after them. Family members can feel anxious as they do not know whether to help their loved one or not. All these compound the amounting stress.

Many people hesitate to seek help because they don’t know what to expect — especially when it comes to support groups.

There is a common misconception that support groups involve pressure to speak, judgement from others, or being forced to share personal details. In reality, support groups are designed to be safe, respectful, and confidential spaces.

In a support group:
• You are not forced to speak
• You are listened to without judgement
• You can move at your own pace

For many, knowing what to expect reduces fear and makes the first step feel more manageable. Support groups offer connection, understanding, and shared experience — which can be deeply healing.

Were you there when Mr D courageously shared his journey of supporting a loved one struggling with a gambling addiction?

At the Mandarin Talk co-organised by One Hope Centre and Glimmer of Hope Ministry on 6 June 2026, Mr D gave a heartfelt testimony about the challenges, fears, and emotional toll that addiction can have on families. He also shared how support, understanding, and hope helped him navigate this difficult season.
Addiction does not only affect the individual. It impacts spouses, parents, children, siblings, and loved ones who often carry the burden silently.

At One Hope Centre, we believe that affected family members matter too. Through counselling, support groups, education, and community programmes, we help family members gain the knowledge, resilience, and support they need to cope and heal.

Support our work. Your donation can help family members like Mr D find hope, strength, and practical support while walking alongside a loved one with an addiction.
