What does it mean to be a man today?
We’re grateful to be featured in CNA TODAY’s Big Read on the changing views of masculinity and traditional gender roles among men in Singapore.
At Fellowship of Men Singapore (FMS), we believe the conversation about masculinity shouldn’t be about asking men to become less masculine.
It should be about developing healthier models of masculinity.
There is nothing inherently wrong with strength, courage, providing for your family or wanting to protect the people you love.
The question we should be asking is:
What do we do with that strength?
Can we be strong without being violent?
Can we be honest about our struggles without feeling ashamed?
Can we ask for help without believing that makes us weak?
Can we take responsibility when we get something wrong?
And can we be there for another brother — not only when things are going well, but when he is struggling too?
Over the past six months, our FMS community has grown from 17 to 80 men. To us, that growth says something important: men are looking for places where they can connect, have honest conversations and encounter healthier examples of what masculinity can look like.
We don’t believe men need to abandon masculinity.
We believe we need to broaden it.
Strength without violence.
Honesty without shame.
Brotherhood without judgment.
Thank you to CNA TODAY for including Fellowship of Men Singapore and our perspective in this important conversation.
