🍺🥨 Prost! Oktoberfest at SRC, 14 October Chapter Meeting 🍻

With our President away, Napoleon Koh stepped up as Acting President, while also taking on an evaluation. Jude Simpson was our Toastmaster of the Evening and reminded us that every toast is a chance to connect. 🥂

Elita Thia, our Language Evaluator, gave us the Word of the Day: "brew." Speakers and Table Topics participants happily poured it into their speeches, from a life that is "still brewing" to an intent to brew influence!

🎤 Speech Highlights:
Helen Thng opened with a humorous take on "Life as a Single," admitting she is still only an observer who dares not take the plunge into marriage. 💍

Joe Cheu shared "Zero to Hero," a trilogy of speeches on bouncing back higher and better, reminding us that inward change translates into outward change.

Michael Rodrigues DTM gave us "The Bell," a reflection on being mindful of health, mind and spirit, until the bell tolls for us. 🔔

Christopher Emmanuel closed the speeches with "An Eggy Affair!", a scandalous pairing of eggs and asparagus, and how he uses food as "medicine" to keep him in good health and shape. 🥚

💬 Evaluations:
Joanne Chen, Rosy Ang (in her first time as an evaluator, well done!), Napoleon Koh and Linda Neo gave thoughtful, encouraging feedback, with a reminder to always lead with positive feedback.

🗣️ Table Topics:
Anne Marie Gutierrez DTM, our Table Topics Master, brewed up a round of b**r themed prompts. Anne, Lili Heng, Jude Simpson, Frances Gan and Lynn Phang took on the challenge, with Frances winning the Best Table Topic ribbon with her short spiel on how she is a teetotaller and already drunk on life; having only "tasted b**r only when I kissed men who drank b**r" 😄

🌕🐰The Legend of Chang'E: Mid-Autumn at SRC, 23 September Chapter Meeting 🏹🥮

Under the glow of the mid-autumn moon, and in another new meeting venue in SRC, we gathered to celebrate the timeless legend of Chang'E, the Moon Goddess, her loyal Jade Rabbit and Houyi the Archer. Raphael brought a set of toy bow and arrows 🏹 which unfortunately we didn't have a chance to have a go at it! 😭

Rosaline Phan took the stage as our Toastmaster of the Evening, guiding us through the night, while VP Membership Joe Cheu stepped in as Acting President. We were also delighted to welcome our guest, Nicole de Souza, who jumped right in and made her mark on the night!

🎤 Speech Highlights:
Rosy Ang broke the ice with her Ice Breaker, "CASH."

Joe Cheu shared "A Mustard Seed," reminding us that SRC Toastmasters is good soil for growing as speakers and leaders. 🌱

Joanne Chen had us in stitches with "Confessions of a Sports Disaster," admitting that "sports balls seem to have a hatred for me" and that she swims "at the speed of a friendly sea turtle." 🐢

Michael Rodrigues DTM closed out the speeches with "Body, Mind and Spirit," leaving us with a line to remember: "Age does not matter, so long as matter does not age."

💬 Evaluations:
Our four speakers received thoughtful feedback from Raphael Lee, Linda Neo, Jude Simpson and Chin Mei Har DTM, with Jude Simpson also wrapping up the evening as General Evaluator.

🗣️ Table Topics:
Elita Thia served up a moonlit menu of impromptu questions on Traditions, Mythology and Customs: Would you fly to the moon? If you were Chang'E, would you choose immortality or love? Mooncakes: tradition or trend?

🤖 Something New:
Raphael Lee led an AI Augmentation workshop on Language Evaluation, showing us fresh ways to sharpen how we listen to, and learn from, each other's words. And Rosaline Phan gave us a classic Singlish gem of the night: "Catch no balls!":🤣

🥮 Festive Treats
True to the season, members brought along an assortment of mooncakes to share during the coffee break, plus White Rabbit sweets as a sweet nod to the Jade Rabbit of the festival folklore. 🐇

Celebrating Our Quirks: 9 September Chapter Meeting 🎉🧦

What a delightfully weird and wonderful evening at SRC Toastmasters as we gathered under the theme "Wonderful Weirdos Wednesday: Celebrating our Quirks," with members turning up in their quirkiest, most unique styles, think fur scarves, funky socks and bell bottoms!

Raphael Lee took the stage as our Toastmaster of the Evening, setting the tone for the night.

Our Language Evaluator, Michael Rodrigues DTM, gave us the Word of the Day: "eccentric," fitting for the theme!

🎤 Speech Highlights:
Nicole Liang opened the floor with "Becoming Her," bringing us along on a journey that included, of all things, a google map that kept redirecting her. A quirky reminder that even our detours shape who we become.

Lynn Phang reminded us that nobody joins a soccer club to sit on the bench, and shared how concentrating too much on herself once bred fear instead of confidence.

Lili Heng got cooking with "A Little" water for her radish cake only to realise the recipe called for "A Litre" of water. Speak of the importance of enunciation!

Jude Simpson closed out the speeches with "Strange Concepts," exploring public relations strategies with his signature wit.

Before the meeting closed, our Language Evaluator, DTM Michael Rodrigues, also armed us with two new favourites, "correctables" and "collectibles," and nudged us to elevate our language, swapping out "very" for better adjectives and "I think" for a more confident "I believe."

🎂 We also celebrated our September babies with a well deserved coffee break and birthday cheer!

An evening full of quirks, courage and community, this is what Toastmasters is all about.

🇸🇬 Kallang Wave: Celebrating Our Nation, 12 August Chapter Meeting 🇸🇬

SRC Toastmasters came together under the theme "Kallang Wave: Celebrating our Nation," with members dressed anywhere along the gradient of white to red, riding our own wave of speeches and spirit.

Jenny Goh took the stage as Toastmaster of the Evening, guiding us through the night, while our Language Evaluator, Charlene Phua, gave us the Word of the Day: "Unite" (along with "Unity," "United," and "Unison"), a theme that echoed through every speech that followed.

🎤 Speech Highlights:
Joanne Chen opened with "The Wake Up Call," reminding us that growing older is inevitable, but growing weaker doesn't have to be. Her health scare a few years ago pushed her to take her wellbeing more seriously, and she's been more proactive about staying healthy ever since.

Lili Heng, self confessed shopaholic and workaholic, shared her motherhood journey in "The Imperfect Mum," recounting the times, more than once, she lost her children at malls overseas during family shopping trips.

Jude Simpson delivered his Presentation Mastery Level 4 speech, "I Never Walk Alone," tackling the challenge of managing a difficult audience head on. His speech turned our attention to the unseen among us: lonely seniors, the disadvantaged, and those easily overlooked. His call to action stayed with us: no one should walk alone.

Closing the night, Sathish Naidu had us laughing with "Life is Like an Arranged Marriage: Be Happy!", sharing how the entire village pitched in to help him find the perfect bride.

Evaluators Christopher Emmanuel, Linda Neo, Raphael Lee, and Anne Lee gave thoughtful feedback on each speech. Christopher Emmanuel evaluated Joanne with his usual eloquence and finest use of the English language and won the best evaluator award.

Table Topics Master, Eugene Low, put our speakers to the impromptu test and Charlene was without doubt the captivating champion Table Topic speaker who admonished everyone on the importance of being united as a foremost aspiration for Singapore’s future.

An evening of reflection, laughter, and unity: this is what Toastmasters is all about.

Celebrating Diversity – 22 July Chapter Meeting 🌏🧕🏽🕌👘

What a colourful evening at SRC Toastmasters as we came together under the theme "Beauty in Diversity," celebrating Racial Harmony Day!

Members turned up in their finest ethnic wear — beautiful cheongsams and Malay baju (hats off to Esther Eng), a graceful Vietnamese áo dài (Anne Lee), and the men sharp in batik shirts. 👗

🎤 Speech Highlights:
Christopher Emmanuel wove the batik shirt right into his speech, likening the hardened wax used in its making to our own social ethos — a lovely metaphor for the night's theme.
Jenny Goh reminded us that SRC Toastmasters is like a family: imperfect, but loving. ❤️

💬 Word(s) of the Day:
For the first time ever, our Language Evaluator Anne Marie Gutierrez gave us not one but several Words of the Day, all Singlish words recently inducted into the Oxford English Dictionary!

She also challenged us to elevate our everyday language: swap "do" for "achieve," "embark," or "endeavour," and "things" for "issues" or "projects."

Finally, our Club President, Eugene Low updated us on the new Toastmasters Pathways enhancements and kept us looking forward to the upcoming chapter meeting, contests and social events!

🎉 SRC Toastmasters Kicks Off the New Term with a Perfectly Wonderful Mis-Match and a number of "Firsts"🎉:

First Chapter Meeting of the 2026/2027 Toastmasters year. first meeting in the Singapore Recreation Club Level 3 Boardroom while our usual venue at Lounge 1883 undergoes a , first speech by Nicole Liang, first General Evaluation session, first "Successful Club Series" speech by Jude Simpson and first table topic speech by newest member of Singapore Recreation Club, Rosy Ang!

The meeting featured an inspiring lineup of prepared speeches, including an engaging Ice Breaker by Nicole Liang, personal stories, leadership insights, and plenty of laughter through Jenny Goh's entertaining speech, "Mismatch" which gave us a very intimate look into her humorous and mischievous personality! We also have Joanne Chen who spoke fondly of her home in Shanghai and her people: introducing us to the three iconic buildings across the bund nicknamed "kitchen tools", famed "Xiao Long Bao" and the simple "scallion oil noodles" and a sprinkling of Shanghainese dialect, welcoming us to visit Shanghai.

Table Topics Master Jerry Lee gave us Table Topics that reflected the theme and challenged speakers to think on their feet.

What an incredible evening of celebration, fellowship, and inspiration at the Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) Toastmasters Installation Night 2026/2027!

The night marked the official installation of our new Executive Committee, led by our incoming Club President, Eugene Low, as we embark on another exciting Toastmasters year with the theme:

✨ Show Up • Step Up • Speak Up ✨

Congratulations to all our newly installed EXCO members! We wish you every success as you lead SRC Toastmasters into another year of growth, learning, and excellence.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the well contended "SRC Toastmaster of the Year Award", presented by DTM Michael Rodrigues. Congratulations to Eugene Low on receiving this well-deserved recognition for his outstanding dedication, leadership, and contributions to the club. Eugene was also presented the Triple Crown Award by our District 80 Director-elect, Aaron Ting. 👏👏👏

We had a truly fun filled evening with:
1. The Singapore Trivia contest where the Orange Team came out tops
2. The Unhinged Table Topics which had everyone holding on their seats because the topics centred around the "taboo" topics of s*x, religion and politics, but all was skillfully moderated by our table topics master Raphael Lee.
3. The Spelling Bee Contest where game master Napoleon Koh gave the trickiest words to spell and Elita Thia won the contest after 5 rounds of elimination!

A heartfelt thank you to DTM Michael Rodrigues, our Guests of Honour, organising committee, volunteers, and every member and guest who made this Installation Night such a resounding success.

Here's to a bold new chapter filled with confidence, leadership, friendship, and personal growth.
