The Giving Methodist

The Giving Methodist takes place each year to galvanise Methodists to show acts of kindness.

With the COVID-19 pandemic raging on, let us take courage to step out of our boat and uplift those who need help to ride out this storm.

Rev Stanley Chua, President of Trinity Annual Conference, shares with us how serving can make a profound difference in the lives of those around us, even if it means serving only one person. Let us follow in the footsteps of Jesus and live a life with love and service.

Here are some ways you can be a part of The Giving Methodist:
Give Time: Spend 2 hours to experience first-hand what pastoral care is all about. Learn about respectful, gentle evangelism. Dates are limited so do sign up early!
Give a Donation: Provide financial assistance to over 11,000 families and individuals disadvantaged by different forms of poverty, including poor health, fractured relationships, broken dignity or financial distress.
Give Voice: You can use the digital resources and homilies available through The Giving Methodist website to spread the word about those who are in need.

The Giving Methodist is an initiative spearheaded by Methodist Welfare Services and The Methodist Church in Singapore to galvanise Methodists to show love and kindness to the community in need. It has taken place since 2018 during the season of Lent, a period of reflection for Christians and of giving that honours Christ.

Led by Rev Dr. Norman Wong, Head Chaplain of Methodist Welfare Services, this introductory session is a crucial component of our Pastoral Care training programme. The main objective is to empower volunteers in providing compassionate and respectful care.

Read some reflections by Methodist members who've benefited from the Pastoral Care training.

Focused on the essential skill of Attentive Listening, the session, led by Rev Norman, underscores its pivotal role in demonstrating compassion, empathy, and building trust.

Post-training, you'll apply your newfound skills by ministering to nursing home residents, engaging in meaningful conversations and purposeful interactions.

Led by Rev Dr Norman Wong, Head Chaplain of Methodist Welfare Services, this introductory experience is part of our Pastoral Care training programme. The primary goal is to enhance volunteers' abilities to care for others with gentleness and respect.

The session will centre around a fundamental skill of pastoral care - Attentive Listening. Rev Norman will emphasise how this skill is core to our showing compassion and empathy, fostering connections and building trust.

Following the training, you will have the opportunity to apply your newly acquired skills by ministering to the nursing home residents and engaging them in meaningful conversations and purposeful interactions.

Bishop Dr Gordon Wong shares his thoughts on Mark 10:45: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve”. Mark 10:45 encapsulates the heart of Jesus. Instead of seeking to be served, Jesus exemplified a life of service, compassion and sacrifice. It is a powerful reminder for us to follow in His footsteps by reaching out to the last, the lost and the least.

Every year during Lent, Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) collaborates with The Methodist Church in Singapore for The Giving Methodist (TGM). For 6 years, TGM has aimed to galvanise all Methodists in Singapore to show love and kindness to the distressed and disadvantaged.

Jesus Himself exemplified a life of humble service, especially to the last, lost and least. Mark 10:45 mentioned, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve”. This Lent, we hope to encourage our Methodist community to follow the footsteps of our Master and galvanise fellow believers in doing the same.

With the theme Serving in His Footsteps, TGM 2024 calls on Methodists to:

• Give Time: Church members can sign up for a 2-hour training in pastoral care by MWS Chaplains and minister to nursing home residents.

• Give a Donation: Church members can donate to provide financial assistance to those experiencing different forms of poverty. Churches may also choose to dedicate a 2nd offering.

• Give Voice: Church members can share TGM with their social network and encourage them to be involved. Digital materials are available for downloading from the TGM website. Short recorded homilies by Bishop Dr Gordon Wong, Rev Stanley Chua and Rev Philip Abraham will also be available for sharing during church services.

As we enter the season of Lent, let us not forget to share our blessings with those in need. A group of 10 volunteers from Christ Methodist Church (CMC) hosted a meal for our seniors at MWS Senior Care Centre (SCC) – Eunos yesterday, where they bonded through conversation over bento box lunches and silky soya beancurd.

They were joined by Bishop Dr Gordon Wong who ate with the seniors and engaged them in conversation. He also distributed exclusive Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) cutlery sets to the seniors after the event.

The luncheon was part of Eat Share Connect, a communal outreach that encourages all Methodists to imitate Jesus’ example of table fellowship by hosting a meal for socially isolated seniors or low-income families at their home, church or an MWS centre.

The Giving Methodist campaign aims to galvanise all Methodist to show acts of kindness and love either through the giving of their time, money or voice. This Lent, let us as a Methodist family partake in Table Fellowship.

Themed “Eat Share Connect”, let us come together as a family, a group of friends or even a church to share a meal with the less privileged, lonely and isolated, we demonstrate how to love God and one another.

In Luke 14:12–14, Jesus gives us a biblical basis for communal dining: “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
