An NGO founded and created right after the devastating Nepal earthquake of April 25, 2015, by 23-year old Singaporean Maya Tsering Bhalla, as a way of bringing together like-minded individuals who want to volunteer their efforts and expertise in places where relief is required. The team is currently helping with relief efforts in the aftermath of the Nepal Earthquake, by acquiring and distributing

Today on Women’s Day, I raise a toast to all the women I know, some of whom I admire and love dearly.
I have learnt so much from them, especially from their vulnerabilities because it is this vulnerability that is the bedrock of their strength.
It takes immense courage to acknowledge the deep existential lacerations of the heart and yet be compassionate and generous, even to those who have harmed us.
Many of the women I admire are simple, salt of the earth people- a few are highly educated but many have no grand titles or vaunted professional or academic achievements. However, it is women like them that are the real pillars that hold up our society and our civilisation.
they are our mothers, our grandmother, our teachers, and last but not least, our domestic helpers at home that made it possible to leave our homes and go out into the world and seek our place in it.
And it is to them that I raise my toast and say “I am here because you were there for me.”

*Thank you Kamala Club, (and its Chairman Padmaja Naidu) the oldest Women’s club in Singspore, for honouring an ordinary, semi-retired senior citizen like me as your Special Guest among all the high achievers at this event.*

A very happy and prosperous Lunar New Year to all who celebrate it.
This year, both the Chinese New Year and the Sikkimese New Year (Losar) fall on the same day as we share the same Lunar calendar.
This is the year of the Wood Dragon. It is believed to bring Evolution, Improvement and Good Fortune.
May it truly be a year that brings relief to the physically and spiritually afflicted and instil moral rectitude in every leader of this world, resulting in the peace we all need.

Losar Tashi Delek! 🙏🌺

My act of public kindness (as opposed to Public Intellectualism, whatever that is) for the week is this entreaty to all my close friends, and lovers of fine literature and cinema: please watch the latest version of “Great Expectations”. It’s on the Disney Channel.
I recommend it for all the right reasons of good cinema - a Charles Dickens classic story with a hearty, universally appealing plot, with none other than the inimitable Olivia Colman playing Miss Havisham. Everything she touches turns to gold in my humble opinion.
The plot might sound dark but as you watch you will find it is anything but (of course, for those who’ve read the book, you’ll know why). I’m looking at you Ruma Phukan, Sabita Pal Kundu, Bindu ZutshiJatinder BhatiaSudha RaiRunima Borah TandonMaya BhallaDeepika Barua, Bijoya SawianBratati NathSharlene DasRuby Das Guptaet al.
“Miss Havisham," portrayed by Olivia Colman, is a wealthy, eccentric recluse, who has lost her mind after being jilted at the alter - a woman bent on revenge. Her family fortune was made in the o***m trade (as was the fortunes of most of the great pillars of society today), and after her brutal heartbreak, she adopts young Estella and raises her as a tool to inflict pain on the opposite s*x.
And adding to the visual and dramatic allure of the series, Pip is played by the dishy and admirably low key British actor Fionn Whitehead. The 25-year old London born actor doesn’t use Social Media and has no interest in fame. What an unusual young lad, he’ll go far.
P.S: No special blandishments of discounts or freebies were offered by Disney Channel for this recommendation. And no AI was employed for writing this review 😊
