February's addition to our Score Follower Series is 春⾬ by Joseph Lim!

The digital concert is also available in full on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/i_mwCw_Ad1c

This piece for solo Viola is inspired by the poem '春⾬' or 'Spring Rain', written by Li Shangyin. This atmospheric work is gestural and explores the physicality of viola performance.

Spring Rain
Dejectedly, I lie down in casual clothes, on this new spring day
White gate is dreary; my wishes are unfulfilled.
The red chamber in the rain looked so cold to me.
The raindrops fell on the wavering lamp as I cam back alone.
During your long journey, do you regret the parting of spring?
Late in the night, I still hope to hold on to your vague image in my dream.
The jade earrings and letter- but where to send them?
Three thousand miles of clouds
how can a wild goose fly across?

春⾬ was performed in 2020 as part of CSS Showcases Singapore New Music Talent, a digital concert organized by the Composers Society of Singapore that aired during the COVID-19 lockdowns. This digital showcase sought to promote the talents of Singapore’s new music practitioners and composers via an unusual perspective: a 360-degree action camera (GoPro MAX) was attached to the instrument or worn by the performer, thus capturing the technical challenges and intricacies of the performer close-up. The concert featured Singaporean virtuosos and new music proponents, Churen Li (on the piano), and Christoven Tan (on the viola), with behind-the-scenes interviews with both performers, as well as the composers of the pieces featured.

Pianist See Ning Hui returns with ReSounding 重生(声), part of a series featuring F***y Mendelssohn’s Easter Sonata. Written in 1828—before the Mendelssohn siblings revived Bach’s St Matthew Passion and transformed classical music—the Sonata was buried in the archives and misattributed to Felix until its rediscovery in 2010. Following concerts in London and Manila, where critic Yoko Tsunekawa noted her ‘rich palette of colours and expressive phrasing’, Ning Hui brings the Sonata into dialogue with voices from home.

Two Singaporean composers offer striking new soundworlds: Ng Yu Hng’s ‘memory mansion’ and Toh Yan Ee’s evocation of kampung birdsong in HDB estates. Sunlit hills and the raging West Wind come alive in Debussy’s preludes, while Florence Price’s celebration of her African-American identity resonates with Chopin’s undertones of Polish insurrection.

Date: 22 February 2026
Venue: Esplanade Recital Studio

📢 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS 📢

The 2026 Austin Game Music Festival will take place from March 6 - 16. AGMF celebrates the artistry and innovation of video game music through training, education, live performance, and interdisciplinary collaboration among composers, developers, and the next generation of creatives, who learn directly from guest composers and industry professionals.

It will take place during spring break in Austin, Texas, and offers student composers an exceptional opportunity to work directly with leading figures in the game-music industry — including Austin Wintory — as well as a professional game studio and the musicians of Density 512. Participants receive lessons, workshops, and hands-on collaboration, culminating in an exit product: original music for a new or unreleased game, performed and recorded in Austin.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, every accepted participant to AGMF 2026 will receive a minimum $500 scholarship, automatically applied upon acceptance.

Deadline: 18 January 2026

2025 was an eventful year, and as we usher in the year ahead, we can't help but reflect with nostalgia on the year that has passed.

We were deeply excited to kick off two inaugural events in 2025: the Giam-Lim Composition Prize, in partnership with The TENG Company, and our very first CSS Composer Lab workshop, featuring Irish musicians Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea of the Fidelio Trio. While our composers proudly represented Singapore abroad, flying to Japan and Korea to premiere new works and speak on local new music, back home in Singapore, the CSS Young Composers Forum returned for a third edition.

2026 is geared up to be an equally exciting year, with the Singapore Composers Festival scheduled to return. Thank you everyone for your support in 2025! Please stay tuned for further updates from us, and we'd like to wish everyone a blessed 2026, full of new opportunities and new music!
