ArchitectuREAL | Season 3, Episode 1

Can an Architect Limit Their Liability?

Professional liability is an important consideration for architects, particularly on projects with significant responsibilities and risks.

In this episode of ArchitectuREAL, we explore whether an architect's liability can be limited to the agreed fee, the impact of liability clauses in appointments and agreements, and why understanding such provisions matters for everyone involved in a project.

The Singapore Institute of Architects was delighted to welcome our members, partners and friends to the SIA Dinner Reception during Singapore Archifest 2026 on 22 July, as we celebrated the festival’s 20th edition together.

👏🏼 Thank you to Ar. Tan Szue Hann for hosting the evening with your signature humour.

The reception was also an opportunity to recognise and celebrate members of our profession. We were honoured to confer the SIA Fellow (Life) membership on Ar. Theodore Chan.

We also celebrated the recipient of the Young Architects Award 2026, Ar. Jonathan Lim (also Project Management Category Winner), alongside Ar. Sri Saravanan (Community Category Winner) and Ar. Chio Wen Tian (Design Category Winner).

During the evening, SIA President Ar. Tiah Nan Chyuan shared updates on several key initiatives by the Institute, including the recently launched SIArchitects App, which brings membership services together on one convenient platform, as well as the SIA Talent Guide and the latest Young Architects League (YAL) Survey. More about these initiatives can be found in our recent social media posts.

We are deeply grateful to Mr. Chee Hong Tat Chee Hong Tat, Minister for National Development, for joining us and spending the evening engaging so generously with members of the architectural community, listening to their perspectives and sharing thoughtful conversations.

This year’s SIA Dinner Reception welcomed a refreshed, more immersive format, but what made the evening special was seeing our community come together once again. It was a chance to reconnect with familiar faces, welcome new ones, celebrate one another’s achievements, and simply enjoy each other’s company. The warmth, generosity and camaraderie in the room were a wonderful reminder of the spirit that continues to unite our profession.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the evening so memorable!

The SIA - Young Architects League AI Hackathon 2026 brought together architects, designers, technologists, and students to explore how artificial intelligence can transform architectural practice through practical, real-world applications.

Over six months, multidisciplinary teams developed AI-driven solutions addressing challenges across design, BIM, regulatory compliance, project delivery, and practice workflows, with a strong emphasis on the emerging potential of agentic AI.

The programme culminated at Singapore Archifest 2026, where Agent A was awarded First Prize, followed by Metatron in Second Place and AI Digital Reviewer in Third Place. Innovation Awards recognised Team 16, Agent i, Agent D, BIM Reaper, PoC-05 – Automated Quantity Takeoff, and WIP, while the Rising Innovator Awards celebrated Iteration Zero and Building Bytes.

More than a competition, the AI Hackathon has become a valuable platform for bringing together architects, software developers, AI practitioners, students, and industry partners to collaborate, exchange ideas, and build lasting connections. By fostering interdisciplinary teamwork and innovation, it is helping to equip the profession with the skills, networks, and mindset needed to shape the future of the built environment.

A special thank you to our Assessment Panel, speakers, facilitators, Key Sponsor Autodesk , and Strategic Sponsor Nemetschek Group | AI & Data Innovation Hub for making this programme possible.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants for your exceptional work. We look forward to the next edition!

From murals and neighbourhood parks to thoughtfully designed public spaces, architects and urban practitioners are reimagining cities as places that nurture well-being, strengthen community ties, inspire creativity and foster a deeper sense of belonging.

One such example is Blueprint of a Shophouse at 462 Joo Chiat Road, a project by SIA members at OMG Atelier - Ar. Lee Hui Lian, Ar. Lim Pin Jie and collaborators.

SMAP Open Studios: Starting Small brought together young architects, aspiring practitioners, and small-practice owners for candid conversations about what it really takes to start and sustain an architectural practice in Singapore.

Organised by the Small Medium Architecture Practice (SMAP) of the Practice Thrust at the Singapore Institute of Architects, the programme opened the doors to six small studios, offering participants a behind-the-scenes look at different practice models, operational realities and lessons from the journey of building a firm. More importantly, it created space for honest peer-to-peer exchanges, mentorship and meaningful conversations on strengthening the resilience of small practices.

Thank you to our generous hosts for welcoming everyone into your studios and enriching the discussions:

📍 Shing Design Atelier
📍 Prose Architects
📍 WEcreate.co at Ground-Up Initiative (GUI)

We look forward to more opportunities to learn from one another and continue building a stronger architectural community together.
