From 18 to 22 May, Singapore became a meeting point for performing arts professionals from around the world as we hosted the ISPA 2026 Congress and the Anthony Field Academy Talks in the city. The International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) is a global network that brings together practitioners through two annual congresses, fostering connection, collaboration, and creative exchange. In partnership with the National Arts Council, Centre 42 had the pleasure of hosting an ASEAN delegation throughout the Congress, from arrival and settling in, to a week of talks, exchanges, and shared experiences ๐Ÿฉต

Each morning involved guiding the ASEAN delegates across the city to various locations, as well as occasional local breakfast spreads courtesy of Practice Tuckshop and programmes like Kopi Klatch, while offered daily provocations for reflection on our socials.

The Anthony Field Academy programme at The Theatre Practice centred on sustainability and โ€œsame same, and differentโ€, exploring how diverse cultural practices can coexist in harmony. Practice Tuckshop also hosted a shared dinner inspired by Recess Time, extending these conversations through food and storytelling.

Across the ISPA Congress, we experienced sessions where established panels of speakers explored themes from augmented intelligence to evolving audiences, all anchored in sustainability, alongside performances reflecting the diversity of Singaporeโ€™s multicultural society.

Highlights included the ProEx lunch at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, opening space for delegates to share their contexts and explore collaboration, and Kopi Klatch on the final morning, where Southeast Asian delegates gathered to exchange practices informally.

The Congress concluded with a closing reception overlooking the Merlion and Singapore skyline, marking the end of a week of exchange, ideas, and connections across the global performing arts community ๐ŸŒ†

The International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) is a global network that brings together performing arts practitioners through two annual congresses, creating space for meaningful connections, collaboration, and creative exchange across the sector.

For the Singapore edition, the National Arts Council partnered with Centre 42 to host an ASEAN delegation. We had the pleasure of guiding 65 delegates from 10 ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam) throughout their time in the city ๐ŸŒ

May was a month of ๐’‚๐’“๐’„๐’‰๐’Š๐’—๐’† ๐’‚๐’„๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ at Centre 42, as we spotlighted the works and legacies of Singapore theatre pioneers through a series of programmes and dialogues, including presentations across major performing arts platforms such as the International Society for the Performing Arts [ISPA] and the Singapore International Festival of Arts [SIFA]. ๐Ÿ“Œ

We began with ๐ˆ๐’๐๐€ ๐Ž๐ฉ๐ž๐ง ๐‚๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ (๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐Œ๐š๐ฒ), where delegates explored the Stamford Arts Centre and Waterloo Arts Belt. Drawing inspiration from William Teoโ€™s Festival Village, we imagined the Centre 42 of the future as one node within a global network of theatre archives, each holding distinct niches of theatre history across different contexts. The installation featured artefacts from Williamโ€™s practice, grouped under themes reflecting his work (passionate, human-centred, experimental, collaborative, future-thinking). Visitors and delegates were invited to engage with these artefacts and reflect on how they resonated with their own practices and contexts, drawing connections between Williamโ€™s legacy and contemporary theatre-making and how past and present continue to inform one another.

We then presented ๐๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐… ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฌ (๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—โ€“๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ ๐Œ๐š๐ฒ) as part of SIFA 2026, featuring three pioneers who shaped Singapore theatre from the 1990s onwards: William Teo, Christina Sergeant, and Kuo Pao Kun. The films were screened at The Arts House and will be available online soon, so stay tuned!

This was followed by ๐๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐…๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž - ๐‚๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐’๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ž๐ฌ, ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐“๐จ๐ ๐ž๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ: ๐€ ๐‘๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ญ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž (๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ ๐Œ๐š๐ฒ), a coda to the documentary series, moderated by Olivia Vong with panellists T. Sasitharan, Liz Sergeant Tan, and Jeremiah Choy. The conversation reflected on the interconnected legacies of William, Christina, and Kuo, and how their collaborations and influence helped shape the communal fabric of Singapore theatre today.

A writer, director, and arts educator, Thomasโ€™s work spans plays, musicals, exhibitions, and short films across multiple languages, reflecting a sustained curiosity in form, language, and storytelling.

Entering this residency at a reflective point in his career, Thomas looks back on a decade of practice while questioning what comes next. From recurring patterns in language and casting to the early pressures of production that shape a work, he is interested in what happens when those considerations are set aside.

Over the course of the residency, he will explore working at a different pace and rhythm, creating space to experiment beyond the demands of โ€œproducibilityโ€. This also coincides with a final research project on playwriting as part of his Masterโ€™s programme, in dialogue with Centre 42โ€™s focus on new writing development.

If youโ€™d like to learn more about Thomas and his plans for the residency, head over to https://bit.ly/WIRthomas!
