Deepavali celebrates light overcoming darkness. But for 27 families we support, the festive season brings more worry than celebration. 🪔

For 13 years, Mdm Sivasothi worked as a part-time cleaner. The work gave her routine, structure and, most of all, her independence.

In 2020, her health declined, and she was certified unfit to work. Today she lives alone in a one-room rental flat At 63, she is still too young for the Silver Support Scheme, and has no one else to depend on.

“I try to manage on my own as much as I can,” she says.

She has spent years making sure she never asks for too much. This Deepavali, let’s make sure Mdm Sivasothi and 26 other families don’t have to manage alone.

327+ people have stood with her. From her husband's bedside, she wrote back to thank every single donor, and signed it with her own name. To her, you are no longer strangers.

But Mr Tay is still in hospital, still on dialysis, and his condition still swings between fragile and critical. As a foreign national without PR status, he's charged unsubsidised rates. His bill is S$293,600.75 and rising. Mdm Loh has already sold years off their home's remaining lease to pay for his care.

At the heart of Lights for Hope are families rebuilding, hoping, and holding on — children and their parents, seniors living alone, and individuals starting afresh after incarceration.

A father living with an illness once told us that, because of this campaign, he was able to give his children an angbao for the very first time.

She already sold years off their home's remaining lease to keep her husband on dialysis. Yet the bills haven't stopped.

Mdm Loh, 72, has been the sole caregiver since Mr Tay was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2019. As a foreign national without PR status, he's charged unsubsidised rates for his treatment. Mdm Loh is also managing health issues of her own.

In April, a serious foot infection led to an amputation, and his condition has swung between fragile and critical ever since. His hospital bill is S$293,600.75 and still rising. Only 1% has been raised. She's asking for help. Can you?

Here’s something we don’t say often enough: keeping 100% of campaign donations for our clients isn’t easy.

We don’t take a cut, and we don’t want to. A donation made to help someone through a difficult time should go to them. We believe that, even on the days it makes our job harder.

Because someone still has to do the work. Someone has to sit with a family and hear what brought them to us. Someone has to go through the documents and verify what support is needed before we ask you to give. Someone has to keep the platform running when a campaign reaches thousands of people at once.

None of that is paid for by campaign donations. We raise those funds separately, and Walk for Hope is one way we do this.

This year, we hope to raise $200,000 to keep hope within reach for families who need it, and to keep going into the community to meet people who need help but don’t know where to turn.

Assurance came in #1 in the Community Vetted segment, with the highest supporter count across all 20 campaigns! 💛

Thank you to every person who watched Assurance, voted for it, shared it, and encouraged someone else to do the same.

And somehow, Sean's story travelled far beyond home. Support came from 21 countries and regions.

Even more special, 87% of supporters heard about the film from someone they knew, a reminder of just how much of this was carried from person to person.

For us, those 1,747 votes represent support for Sean's story, and for what can happen when a young adult with autism is given the opportunity to learn, contribute, and see what they are capable of.

For years, Suit Fong wondered what the future would look like for her son Sean.

Would he be able to work? Become more independent? Find his place in the world?

Then, at 29, Sean took on his first micro-job through Kopi Teh Makan, a vocational programme creating micro-job opportunities for youths with special needs. He surprised everyone.

And one day, he asked his mother: “Mummy, are you proud of me?”

For Suit Fong, that moment brought something she had spent years hoping for: Assurance. Their story became our short film, Assurance, which has now reached the semi-finals of the Inspiring Asia Film Awards.

If it wins, S$10,000 will go towards supporting Kopi Teh Makan, helping create more opportunities for youths with special needs like Sean.
