♿ Moving Together: A Dialogue on Accessible & Inclusive Public Transport
For many persons with disabilities, public transport is part of everyday independence. But getting from one place to another can still come with challenges that others may not always notice.
We’re glad to share this upcoming dialogue where persons with disabilities and community voices can speak openly about their commuting experiences, what is working well, and what can be improved to make our public transport system more accessible and inclusive.
One issue we hope can be discussed openly is the sharing of priority bays on buses, particularly between wheelchair users, PMA users and parents with strollers.
At FDS, we believe inclusion should never become a contest over whose needs matter more. Parents travelling with young children face very real challenges too. At the same time, we need to recognise an important difference: for a wheelchair user, the wheelchair bay is not simply a more convenient space. It may be the only safe and accessible place on the bus where they can travel.
A stroller can sometimes be folded or repositioned, even though doing so may be difficult and inconvenient. A wheelchair user cannot simply transfer out of their wheelchair or move elsewhere on the bus.
We hope the conversation can help build a better understanding of the different needs of those who use priority spaces, and how these spaces can be designed, communicated and managed more effectively. In particular, it is important to recognise when an accessible space is essential to someone’s ability to travel safely and independently. These everyday experiences can help shape practical solutions, clearer understanding and a public transport system that is more inclusive and considerate of everyone who relies on it.
Organised by youths from Toa Payoh Central and driven by Young PAP, the session will be hosted by Cai Yinzhou and joined by Mr Baey Yam Keng, Minister of State for Transport.
We encourage our members, caregivers and friends who have experiences or views to share to join the conversation. Your everyday experiences matter, and they should be part of how accessibility is shaped.
