This International Day of the Girl Child, the World Toilet Organization highlights the importance of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and safe, accessible school toilets in creating an environment where every girl can learn, participate, and thrive.

Without proper sanitation facilities, privacy, water, and menstrual hygiene support, girls can face unnecessary barriers to their education and well-being. Safe school toilets are not just infrastructure — they are essential to protecting dignity, supporting health, and promoting equal opportunities.

We have learned this after 25 years of work with several countries:

🚽A toilet is not sanitation infrastructure. It is economic infrastructure.

We cannot end poverty while 3.5 billion people still lack safely managed sanitation.

Every dollar we fail to invest in toilets is costing the global economy $5 in lost productivity, healthcare costs, and missed education.

TOILETS REDUCE POVERTY AND STIMULATE GROWTH :

Poor sanitation costs families up to 10% of their income in avoidable medical expenses.

When schools and workplaces lack safe, private toilets, girls miss 20% of school days and women traders leave markets early. A gender-responsive toilet restores 300+ productive hours per woman per year.

No market, no school, no health center can function productively without toilets.

🌍🚽Imagine a world without toilet.

A world where people defecate in the open.

A world where children die from cholera and dysentery.

A world where women and girls cannot manage their menstrual hygiene.

A world where people cannot go to public places and be free.

This is the reality for millions.

But access to clean and safe toilets has helped millions of people in the world:

👉Improve their health.
👉Keep girls in school.

We should take lessons from China, Japan, Singapore that has made clean toilets their priority.

This November, the world's sanitation leaders are heading to Thailand.

What can a toilet summit do for a city?

In 2004, as Beijing prepared to host the 2008 Olympics, public toilets were a major concern—for residents, tourists, and the city’s global image.

The World Toilet Organization brought the 4th World Toilet Summit to Beijing, putting public sanitation at the center of an international conversation and highlighting the connection between clean toilets, tourism, and a city’s global reputation.

The Summit gave Beijing a global platform to showcase its transformation in public toilet infrastructure and brought international attention to the importance of accessible, quality public toilets.

By the time the Olympics arrived, Beijing had thousands of upgraded public toilet facilities across the city and major tourist destinations.

And perhaps the greatest sign of success?

Nobody talked about the toilets.

That is the role of the World Toilet Summit: bringing the right people together, putting sanitation on the agenda, and turning overlooked challenges into opportunities for action.
