As America celebrates 250 years, here's a piece of history worth knowing…

Did you know? When George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States in 1789, he took his oath of office on a Masonic Bible borrowed from St. John's Lodge No. 1 in New York City. ✨

But the story gets better.
In 1784, the Marquis de Lafayette — Washington's beloved friend and fellow brother — gifted him a hand-embroidered Masonic apron. Made of white satin and lovingly decorated by Madame Lafayette herself, it remains one of the most treasured artifacts in American Masonic history.

Two brothers. Two nations. One enduring bond. 🤝

This anniversary year, we're proud to carry forward the same principles that guided the Founding Fathers — Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Masonic Instruction: On the Distinction Between Clandestine, Irregular, and Unrecognized

If there is one subject which too often leads well-meaning Brethren from harmony into discord, it is the careless use of the terms Clandestine, Irregular, and Unrecognized.
These words were not established to divide us, nor to elevate one Brother above another, but rather to preserve order, clarity, and understanding within the Craft. Yet, when misapplied, they may become tools of pride, contention, and conduct unworthy of a Mason.

Let us therefore approach this matter in the true Masonic spirit, calmly, with due regard for truth, and guided by reason rather than passion, and examine these terms as they were originally intended to be understood.

Clandestine
Its Defect Lies in Its Origin, Not Merely in Its Practice
A clandestine Lodge, or Grand Lodge, is one which has never been lawfully constituted. It possesses no legitimate foundation upon which the edifice of Masonry may stand.
It bears:
No lineage
No warrant
No authority derived from a duly recognized Grand Lodge
Such bodies are often the product of self-creation, whether by those who have been justly expelled from the Craft, or by individuals who have never been regularly initiated into its Mysteries.
A clandestine Lodge is, by its very nature, always irregular.
Its error is not incidental, but fundamental, it was irregular from its very inception.

Irregular
A Departure in Practice, Not in Origin
An irregular Lodge or Grand Lodge is one which may have been lawfully constituted in its beginnings, yet has since deviated from the ancient Landmarks and established usages of the Craft.
Such deviations may include:
The removal of the requirement for belief in a Supreme Being
The admission of those who profess no such belief
The admission of women where this stands contrary to the governing Constitution
The alteration of essential points of the Ritual
A commonly cited example is that of the Grand Orient of France, which departed from the traditional requirement of belief in Deity.
An irregular body is not, of necessity, clandestine.
Its foundation may be legitimate, yet its later course has diverged from the principles which once governed it.

Unrecognized
A Matter of Recognition, Not of Legitimacy
An unrecognized Lodge or Grand Lodge is simply one with which your own Grand Lodge maintains no formal relations.
It is no more, and no less, than this.
It does not of itself imply that such a body is:
Clandestine
Irregular
Spurious or composed of “false Masons”
Recognition is an administrative and jurisdictional matter, shaped by policy, procedure, and mutual agreement.
It may vary from one Grand Lodge to another, and is not, in itself, a judgment upon the regularity or legitimacy of a body.
Thus, it is entirely possible for a Lodge to be regular in its origin and practice, and yet remain unrecognized by another jurisdiction.

Why Does This Matter?

Because, too often, these terms are wielded as weapons, when they were intended as instruments of understanding.
The truth is simple:
Whatever the classification of another body, a Mason’s first and constant duty is to conduct himself as a Mason.
We are taught to practice:
Brotherly Love
Relief
Truth
Yet it is regrettable that some forget these sacred principles the moment they encounter a Lodge under a different banner or obedience.
Let us speak plainly.
Much of the harshest judgment is often directed toward Masonic Orders admitting women.
Women’s Masonic Orders have existed far longer than any of us, and have endured with dignity and constancy.
Even the United Grand Lodge of England, the Premier Grand Lodge of the world, acknowledges their presence, maintains respectful relations beyond tiled Lodge, and treats them with the consideration they are due.
If such an example is set at the highest level of the Craft, then surely it is within our power, and indeed our obligation, to do the same.

To Clarify

Freemasonry was never intended as a gate to exclude, but as a path by which men may improve themselves and, through that improvement, benefit all mankind.
Guard well the integrity of your own Lodge, as is your solemn duty, yet extend due respect to the existence of others, even where differences may arise.
Above all, conduct yourself in accordance with the obligations you have freely undertaken.
For if we lose our temper, our dignity, or our charity at the sight of a different apron, then the fault lies not with them, but within ourselves.

SMIB 🙏🤗

HARMONY IN THE LODGE

Harmony isn’t just a nice word we throw around in closing…

It’s the foundation of everything we do.

Without it—
the ritual means less,
the brotherhood weakens,
and the Lodge slowly loses its strength.

In Freemasonry, harmony means something deeper than simply “getting along.”

It means many different men… becoming one working body.

Different backgrounds.
Different beliefs.
Different personalities.

Yet we meet on the level…
and part upon the square.

A Lodge in harmony is not one without disagreement—

It’s one where disagreement is handled with respect, restraint, and brotherly love.

Because let’s be honest…

Put enough men in a room, and opinions will clash.

But a Mason doesn’t let ego take the chair.

He governs his tongue.
He subdues his passions.
He remembers why he’s there.

Diversity is not a weakness in the Lodge… it’s a strength.

One Brother sees the history.
Another sees the ritual.
Another the esoteric.
Another the fellowship.

Different perspectives—
same Temple being built.

But here’s the part many forget:

Harmony starts within.

If a man is unsettled, bitter, or divided in himself…
he will bring that into the Lodge.

But a man who has found balance—
who has done the inner work—

He becomes a stabilizing force for everyone around him.

And just like in nature…

If one element falls out of balance—
the whole system feels it.

That’s why we must protect harmony.

Not by avoiding hard conversations…

But by having them the right way.

Because a Lodge in harmony is a powerful thing.

It’s a place where men grow.
Where truth is pursued.
Where Brotherhood is real.

Not forced.
Not fragile.

But earned.

So the question is, Brother—

Are you contributing to harmony…

or quietly disrupting it?

🗳️ More than just a "No": The Surprising History of the Blackball
Ever used the term "blackballed"? 🧐 You might be surprised to learn it’s not just a figure of speech—it’s a tradition that goes back thousands of years, and it's still a huge part of Freemasonry today.

📜 Where did it start?
Before it was a "cancel culture" term, balloting was a serious business:

Ancient China (2000 BCE): Nobles literally used black and white stones to decide life-or-death matters. ⚖️

Ancient Greece: Legends like Ajax and Odysseus had their fates decided by pebbles dropped into jars.

Georgian London: This is where the modern "Ballot Box" really took off, becoming the "sentinel" of our Lodges.

⚪ Why do we still do it?
In Freemasonry, we aren't just a club; we’re a community. We use a strictly secret ballot to make sure every new member is a great fit for the group.

Whether it's dropping a white ball for "yes" or a black ball for "no," the goal is harmony. It ensures that everyone in the room is 100% comfortable with the person standing next to them. 🤝

⚠️ Integrity Over Everything
Being a Mason comes with a responsibility. We’re taught never to let personal grudges or "private piques" influence our vote. It’s not about whether you like someone's car or their job—it's about their moral character.

We vote to protect the integrity of the Craft, ensuring our Lodges in Warwickshire stay strong, welcoming, and fair for everyone.
