The ITUC was founded at its inaugural Congress in Vienna, Austria, on 1 - 3 November 2006. It groups together the former affiliates of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the World Confederation of Labour (WCL), along with trade union organisations which had no global affiliation. The ICFTU and the WCL dissolved themselves on 31 October 2006, to pave the way for the cr

eation of the ITUC. The ITUC-AP, as an organic part of the ITUC, strives for social justice and decent work, giving special attention to problems affecting the workers in the region, to further the aims and objectives of the ITUC. In ensuring the conditions for the enjoyment of universal human rights and effective representation of working women and men in the region, the ITUC-AP, working closely with the Global Union Federations (GUFs), assumes the task of promotion of economic justice, democracy and peace. Combating poverty, exploitation, oppression and inequality is our fundamental areas for trade union action. The ITUC-AP adheres to the principles of trade union democracy and independence, as set out in its Regional Constitution. It is governed by four-yearly Regional Conferences, a Regional General Council and a Regional Executive Bureau.

Historic win for platform workers! ✊

ITUC-Asia Pacific welcomes the landmark adoption of International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 193 on Decent Work in the Platform Economy, the international labour standard dedicated to protecting platform workers.

For ride-hailing drivers, delivery riders, domestic workers, online freelancers, care workers, logistics workers and many others, the ILO Convention 193 affirms what has long been denied: platform workers are workers.

It recognises their rights to freedom of association, collective bargaining, occupational safety and health, social protection, and protection against unfair deactivation and opaque algorithmic management.

💬 “The adoption of the Convention is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of the next phase of our work: ensuring that these rights become reality through ratification, implementation, organising and collective bargainin.” - Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of ITUC-AP.

The call to end child labour is not a once-a-year demand; it is a daily commitment of trade unions.

The Indian National Trade Union Congress underscores that child labour means tackling poverty, unemployment, weak labour law enforcement, and inadequate social protection, while ensuring decent work for adults and protection for every family. ✊

🗣️ “Platform workers can now use this Convention to organise in trade unions, just like other workers to defend their rights and interests. ” Luc Triangle, ITUC General Secretary

has no place in our workplaces, supply chains, communities, or fields.

From Faisalabad, the textile hub of Pakistan, Pakistan United Workers Federation reminds us that ending child labour is a shared responsibility of trade unions, employers, and governments.

For KSBSI Indonesia, ending child labour means looking at where exploitation happens — in plantations, in domestic work, and across supply chains where poverty wages and insecure jobs push families into survival mode.

KSBSI does not forget the issue of child labour. This World Day Against Child Labour, they raise the calls: protect children, respect workers’ rights, and ensure adults have decent work and living wages. ✊

Federation of Free Workers reminds us that eliminating child labour, especially in its worst forms, is a fundamental rights of workers. Thus, trade unions must work together to fight ! ✊

On World Day Against , Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of ITUC-Asia Pacific, reminds us that child labour is a trade union issue.

Child labour does not happen in isolation. It persists where adults are denied decent work, living wages, labour rights, and social protection.

🌏🤝 The ITUC participated in the Policy for Development Asia-Pacific Meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia, alongside a delegation from ITUC-Asia Pacific, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Nepal.

🗣️ The delegation brought forward the priorities of trade unions and workers, emphasizing that decent jobs must remain at the heart of development, the Global Gateway, and Just Transition initiatives across the region.

⚡ During the discussions, Rekson Silaban (KSBSI) highlighted the challenges faced by workers and trade unions under Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). He stressed that, despite the significant impact on workers, trade unions have not been meaningfully involved in the process.

📢 Trade unions called for:
✅ Meaningful social dialogue and public participation in the design and implementation of the Global Gateway, with trade unions and civil society organizations fully included.
✅ A stronger social dimension in policies, with funding for training, worker engagement, and community participation—not only business-driven approaches.
✅ A united front between trade unions and civil society organizations to advance a truly just transition.

✊ A Just Transition can only succeed when workers have a seat at the table.

🌏 Asia-Pacific remains as the second-worst region in the world for the working people, according to the newly released 2026 International Trade Union Confederation - ITUC Global Rights Index.

🚨 The region's rating is unchanged from 2025 at 4.08, indicating that systematic violations of workers' rights persist. The most alarming trend? A surge in state-sponsored repression. The number of countries that arbitrarily arrested and detained workers and trade unionists increased from 70% in 2025 to78% in 2026.

🗨️ Shoya Yoshida, ITUC-Asia Pacific General Secretary: "When arbitrary arrests of trade unionists rise and the right to strike is systematically crippled, it is not only the workers who are under attack. It is also a direct attack on democratic freedoms as a whole."

✊ Despite the rising tide of trade union repression, trade unions refuse to be silenced. We will continue to defend hard-won labour rights and hold governments accountable for labour rights violations.

The Asia-Pacific region remains one of the world's most challenging environments for working people, maintaining its position as the second-worst region globally for workers' rights.

📢 JUST LAUNCHED: The 2026 ITUC Global Rights Index

🗣️“The 2026 Global Rights Index shows that the crisis for workers’ rights is no longer confined to the margins - it is now at the heart of democracies. Governments are failing to protect working people, and in many cases are actively undermining them.” Luc Triangle, ITUC General Secretary
