FLA Singapore successfully concluded the final day of our WSQ Navigating Franchise Laws and Agreements (FLAGS) course on 7 October 2026.

A highlight of the session was the sharing by our invited guest speaker, Dixon Soh, Director and Head of IP/IA Practice, who provided participants with valuable insights into intellectual property, intangible assets and legal risk management within franchise arrangements.

His sharing complemented the practical guidance provided throughout the course, helping participants better understand the importance of protecting intellectual property, defining contractual rights and responsibilities, and managing legal risks from the outset of a franchise relationship.

⚖️ Understanding the Legal Foundations of Franchising

FLA Singapore concluded the first day WSQ Navigating Franchise Laws and Agreements (FLAGS) course today, led by trainers Robin Yeo and Kelly Liew.

Participants gained practical insights into the essential components of a franchise agreement, including:
🔹 Grant of franchise and licensing rights
🔹 Franchise fee structures
🔹 Franchisor and franchisee obligations
🔹 Important and commonly used clauses
🔹 Common weaknesses and pitfalls to avoid
🔹 Confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements

Through real-world case studies, including Chatime vs Tealive, non-compete and non-solicitation disputes, and GNC vs LAC, participants explored how precise definitions, carefully drafted clauses, and clear post-termination obligations can significantly affect the rights and responsibilities of all parties.

One key takeaway was that franchise agreement templates downloaded online may not be sufficiently comprehensive or tailored to the specific business. When it comes to franchise agreements, clarity and careful drafting matter.

🌏 Connecting ideas, sharing perspectives and strengthening the global franchise community in Taipei!

On 30 September 2026, FLA Singapore was pleased to participate in the World Franchise Council (WFC) Meeting 2026, alongside franchise associations and industry representatives from around the world.

FLA Singapore was represented by Mr Albert Kong, International Relations Advisor, and Ms Mary Ann Bey, Assistant Executive Director, who joined fellow WFC members for a full day of meaningful conversations, knowledge exchange, and collaboration on the continued development of the global franchising community.

A key focus of today’s programme was the WFC Strategic Plan for 2026-2030, where members discussed its strategic pillars and flagship projects, sharing perspectives and ideas on how these initiatives can be translated into meaningful action and greater impact across markets.

Through the strategic group discussions, members also exchanged views on common industry challenges, opportunities for collaboration, and how franchise associations can work more closely together to strengthen their respective franchise ecosystems.

For FLA Singapore, international platforms such as the WFC and APFC provide valuable opportunities to strengthen relationships with our global counterparts, exchange best practices and build meaningful connections that can facilitate two-way market opportunities, supporting Singapore brands in their internationalisation journey, while also connecting international brands with opportunities to enter and grow in Singapore.

🌏 Strengthening Collaboration Across Asia-Pacific

FLA Singapore is pleased to have participated in the 2026 Annual Asia Pacific Franchise Confederation (APFC) Meeting, held today, 29 September 2026, in Taipei, Taiwan, and hosted by the Association of Chain and Franchise Promotion, Taiwan (ACFPT).

Representing FLA Singapore were Mr Albert Kong, International Relations Advisor and Ms Mary Ann Bey, Assistant Executive Director, joining fellow franchise associations and industry representatives from across the region to exchange insights, strengthen partnerships and explore opportunities for greater regional collaboration.

🤝 A key milestone was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the establishment of the ASEAN Franchise Committee (AFC) under the APFC framework, bringing together participating organisations from six countries to strengthen cooperation and connectivity within the regional franchise community.

The AFC aims to promote the growth and internationalisation of franchise businesses across ASEAN, facilitate cross-border franchise, investment and market-entry opportunities, encourage knowledge and best-practice sharing, and strengthen connections among franchise organisations and industry stakeholders.

💡 Learning, Sharing & Collaborating
Another highlight of today’s programme was the APFC Peer-to-Peer Learning Roundtables, which provided a valuable platform for delegates to exchange experiences, practical ideas and perspectives around two key areas:

- Association Challenges & Solutions - exchanging practical strategies and solutions to strengthen member associations, enhance member value and advance the franchising sector.

- Regional Collaboration Opportunities - exploring practical opportunities for APFC members to collaborate, share expertise, and support the sustainable growth of franchising across the Asia-Pacific region.

For FLA Singapore, these exchanges provide valuable opportunities to learn from our regional counterparts, deepen relationships and explore how our networks can better support members seeking opportunities beyond Singapore.
