Homelessness is a complex issue. The journey back to stability is often filled with ups and downs, unseen challenges, and difficult seasons. That's why our care does not end when someone leaves our shelter.
Mr. F left our S3P shelter in November 2025 and moved to a longer-term shelter. Since arriving at our shelter in 2024, he has been battling diabetes, heart issues, and high blood pressure.
This year, he has been hospitalised numerous times due to his worsening heart condition and difficulties managing his medications. During his latest admission, the hospital assessed that he was no longer suitable for independent living and arranged for nursing home placement. While awaiting a vacancy, he was transferred to a Transitional Care Facility (TCF).
When we received the update, our staff visited him. As soon as Mr. F saw us, he was surprised and repeatedly asked, "How did you know I was here?"
He became emotional during the visit. Since his admission, no one had visited him. With no family or relatives in Singapore, he had been facing this difficult season alone. Even a simple loaf of milk bread and a box of grapes brought a big smile to his face.
As we were leaving, he shook our staff's hand and, with tears in his eyes, made one simple request:
"Please come and visit me often."
For many rough sleepers and persons experiencing homelessness, hospitalisation brings more than physical illness. It often brings isolation and emotional pain as they watch fellow patients receive visits while they sit alone.
That is why we make it a point to visit our current and former stayers whenever they are hospitalised — to remind them that they are seen, remembered, and not alone.
