Pantun is a traditional form of Malay poetry deeply rooted in Peranakan culture. Often written in short, rhythmic verses with meaningful metaphors and wordplay, pantuns are used to express wisdom, humour, advice, romance, and everyday reflections in a creative and memorable way.

For generations, pantuns have been shared through conversation, performances, and celebrations, helping to preserve cultural traditions and community identity through the years.

Today, we feature two original pantuns composed by members of Gunong Sayang, reflecting on the importance of preserving and passing on our Baba Nyonya heritage for future generations.

As we prepare for the upcoming Wayang Peranakan Batu Bo Makan Gegat The Impossible, these verses remind us that culture continues to live on through shared traditions and community spirit.

More than just a performance, Dondang Sayang is a living art form deeply rooted in Peranakan heritage and cultural storytelling.

Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, Dondang Sayang is a unique tradition of poetic exchange, where singers weave spontaneous pantun verses with wit, rhythm, and emotion through song. Blending influences from the Malay, Peranakan, Portuguese, and Chetty Melaka communities, it reflects the rich multicultural tapestry of our shared history.

For generations, Gunong Sayang has played an important role in preserving and celebrating this treasured art form, ensuring its stories, music, and traditions continue to resonate with future generations.

As we prepare for Batu Bo Makan Gegat The Impossible, we continue to honour and celebrate the cultural legacy that shapes the spirit of Wayang Peranakan today.

Remembering the late Nyonya Sally Gan, a beloved icon of Wayang Peranakan who was fondly known for her comedic servant roles, especially her memorable portrayal of “Ah Cheng” (Amah Jie), which brought laughter and joy to audiences through the years.

Beyond the stage, Nyonya Sally Gan was deeply cherished for her warmth, generosity, and love for Peranakan culture. Through Gunong Sayang, she played an important role in preserving and promoting Wayang Peranakan and its traditions for future generations.

As Gunong Sayang prepares for the upcoming production of Batu Bo Makan Gegat The Impossible, we honour and remember the pioneers whose passion, artistry, and dedication helped shape the enduring spirit of Wayang Peranakan today.

Honouring the late Baba William Tan, a celebrated veteran of Wayang Peranakan who was renowned for his female impersonator roles during the 1950s, at a time when nyonyas were traditionally discouraged from “jual suara” (performing publicly) and “jual muka” (appearing on stage publicly).

Known as the “Sri Panggong” (Diva) of Wayang Peranakan, Baba William Tan was admired for his artistry, elegance, and stage presence, becoming one of the most beloved female impersonators of his time. Beyond the stage, he was also deeply respected for his immense knowledge of Peranakan culture, Dondang Sayang, and the performing arts.

As Gunong Sayang prepares for the upcoming production of Batu Bo Makan Gegat (The Impossible), we remember and honour the pioneers whose passion and dedication helped preserve and shape the legacy of Wayang Peranakan for future generations.
