"Following the Golden Rule"

As we yield to the Holy Spirit, we become more like Christ.

READ: Matthew 22:36-40
36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"

37 And He said to him, " `YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'

38 "This is the great and foremost commandment.

39 "The second is like it, `YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'

40 "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

DEVOTION: Most of us learned the Golden Rule in childhood: Treat others the way we want to be treated. This standard makes intuitive sense to young children, who know that if you want others to share with you, it’s wise to share with them. But as relationships grow more complicated, living this out becomes far more difficult.

In today’s passage, Jesus gives us the two greatest commandments: to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and to love others as yourself. That second one is where most of us struggle. When we’ve been hurt, our instinct is to protect ourselves or to retaliate. We may not strike back openly, but resentment has a way of coloring how we speak about people or treat them.

As believers, thankfully, we’re not left to act in our own strength; we’re indwelt by the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to forgive even when everything in us resists. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). We can’t manufacture these qualities—they grow in us as we yield to the Spirit’s work.

Are these characteristics evident in your interactions with others—even with the people who are hardest to love? Ask the Lord to produce His fruit in you today. What He grows will always surpass what we could force on our own.

"An Invaluable Gift"

Scripture is a life-changing treasure. How can we make it a priority in our daily life?

READ: Psalm 1:1-3
1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.

3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.

DEVOTION: The value we place on something determines how we treat it. For instance, you probably wouldn’t give much thought to caring for an old shoebox. Yet if someone placed $10,000 inside before handing you that same cardboard container, you’d likely work hard to protect it.

Once we realize the worth of Scripture, we no longer read merely out of obligation. Instead, we hunger for its revelation and life-changing power. Here’s how to prioritize God’s Word:

- Turn to it with expectation. Approach Scripture eagerly, trusting that the Lord has something to reveal.

- Meditate on its meaning. Don’t rush. Slow down and let God’s truth sink deep into your thinking (Ps. 1:2).

- Believe what the Lord says. Take Him at His word, even when circumstances make it difficult.

- Apply the Word to your life. Obedience is where Scripture moves from the page into our daily experience. And sharing what we’ve learned strengthens both us and those around us.

The Bible is living truth that can protect and guide, pierce and encourage. When we handle the Word of God as the treasure it is, we will be increasingly conformed to the image of Jesus (Romans 8:29).

"How Fellowship Differs From Salvation"

Confessing our sins restores us to the joy of His presence.

READ: 1 John 1:5-7
5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

DEVOTION: John’s first epistle isn’t about salvation, even though it teaches the necessity of confessing sin. This letter was written to people who already had a relationship with God but needed a reminder of how to remain in fellowship with Him. The Father wants believers to enjoy His presence, but unconfessed sin can hinder that.

Christians have been made new (2 Corinthians 5:17) but aren’t yet perfect and still struggle with temptation. Our physical bodies have natural desires for rest, food, and pleasure. When such yearnings are under the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we live a joyful, God-honoring life. But when we allow them to control us, we step out of fellowship with Him and “walk in darkness” (1 John 1:6).

It’s important to understand that “walking in darkness” does not mean a believer can lose salvation—those who have received Jesus Christ as Savior will never perish (John 10:28-29). Rather, it means we’re choosing to live in a way that weakens our awareness of God’s presence.

Our Father wants us to be in fellowship with Him so we’ll experience fullness of joy. This happens when we spend time in His presence (Psalm 16:11), align ourselves with His will, and share Him with those around us. And if that fellowship is interrupted, confession can restore it, as we’ll see tomorrow.

"Patience: Our Gift of Service"

The fruit that is produced within us is meant to be used for God’s glory.

BIBLE VERSE:
Colossians 3:12-13
12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;

13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

DEVOTION:
In today’s reading, the apostle Paul encourages Christians to “put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” In other words, we don’t come pre-equipped with these traits. Rather, we develop them as we learn to imitate Jesus Christ—“bearing with ... and forgiving each another.”

The Holy Spirit faithfully guides us in growing spiritual fruit. Our Father then provides opportunities to use and further hone these attributes.

For now, let’s zero in on patience—something we tend to classify rather narrowly as “waiting.” That’s certainly part of the definition, but so is the idea of perseverance. When we’re bearing with one another as Paul challenged us to do, we are not simply waiting for them to become better versions of themselves. We are enduring their hardship alongside them or persisting in our attempts to offer aid. We’re caring, listening, and serving however we can. In a world that insists on doing everything quickly, patience is an amazing gift to give another person.

God put patience on the list of spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22-23), indicating that this trait is possible for every believer. Whatever gifts you possess, patience is an attribute you can put on. Practice it for the glory of God and as a way to serve others.

"Obstacles as Opportunities"

When barriers obstruct our path, God provides a way around or the strength to overcome.

READ: Psalm 27:11-14
11 Teach me Your way, O LORD, And lead me in a level path Because of my foes.

12 Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries, For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence.

13 I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.

14 Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.

DEVOTION:
Psalms 27:11-14

Learning to see obstacles as opportunities takes time. When we’re facing barriers, our natural response is frustration or fear. But recalling God’s faithfulness can lead us to a truer perspective. It helps to remember ...

God is at work. He’s actively moving His plan forward, even when we can’t see it. The Lord will either provide a way around obstacles or show us how they fit into His larger purposes. This doesn’t mean every difficulty is part of some divine test, but it does mean God is present and working.

God equips and guides us. His indwelling Holy Spirit communicates what we need to know (John 16:13). Whether we receive His direction in stages or all at once, He asks us to trust Him rather than human wisdom.

God invites our participation. It takes courage to move forward despite barriers. Patience is necessary as we wait for Him to work and reveal His plan. And faith enables us to trust God with the outcome.

Obstacles don’t disappear because we trust the Lord, but our perspective shifts. When we remember these truths, we can face barriers with confidence that God is already at work in ways we may not yet see.

"What It Means to Be a Servant"

When we humbly serve others, we reflect the character of Christ.

READ: Philippians 2:5-7
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

DEVOTION:
The disciples gathered around a table to celebrate Passover with Jesus. And then Christ did the unexpected: He took water and a cloth, knelt before the 12 other men one at a time, and washed their feet.

Peter initially protested. It seemed backwards for the Master to serve His disciples this way. But Jesus explained that Peter would understand later what this act meant (John 13:7-8). In that moment, Jesus was demonstrating the heart of His entire mission: He came into this world as a servant (Matthew 20:28).

A bondslave was the lowest of household servants and had the distasteful job of washing the feet of anyone who entered. This is the very task Christ voluntarily performed that evening, right before His trial and sufferings would begin. The humility He showed in washing dust from His disciples’ feet foreshadowed the greater service He would render the next day, taking upon Himself the shame and penalty of humanity’s sin by dying on the cross.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us Christians are created for the purpose of good works. We were saved to serve our Master. When we surrender to the Lord, we begin to live a life marked not by self-promotion but by humble service that reflects His character.
