What's all the buzz about collective bargaining?

Just like bees, workers are stronger when they come together. But collective bargaining isn't just about strength in numbers. It's also about dialogue, trust and finding common ground.

At the Institute, we equip union leaders with the skills to make collective bargaining more effective.

Not that long ago, creating a promotional EDM often meant working with blocks of text and a few supporting graphics. Today, our union leaders are discovering new ways to bring their messages to life.

At our Basic AI Tools for Personal Productivity course, participants explored how they can create more visually engaging content for member communications, event promotions and outreach campaigns.

More importantly, many were already thinking about how they could apply these skills in their own unions.

"The skills learned today will help me create more engaging EDMs for our upcoming Christmas celebrations and Deepavali Bazaar, helping us better connect with our members."

Nazilla Binte Abedol Razak
ESSU

"I'm looking forward to applying these skills to create a more eye-catching promotional poster for our upcoming Chinese New Year union event and encourage more members to participate."

Yap Siang Long, Darren
SURAWU

The examples featured in this post were created during the course as part of the learning activities. We look forward to seeing how our participants bring these ideas back to their unions and turn them into real campaigns for their members.

Ever wondered how our unions engage their members?

Social media is a critical platform for unions to connect with members. The stories shared can also reach workers who may be wondering what unions do to support them.

But creating videos that get these messages across takes more than just pointing a camera and pressing record.

That's why the institute's Video Content Creation for Online Influence course focuses on practical skills in content planning, storyboarding, filming and editing, helping union leaders create short videos for membership recruitment and engagement.

Here's how two union leaders intend to use these skills:

Brother Alex Toh Tun Ghee, Healthcare Services Employees' Union (HSEU):

“I hope to use these skills to reach out to younger members through platforms like Telegram, sharing how our union supports members, as well as information on career coaching, events and activities.”

Sister Lathika K Lakshmanan, Banking and Financial Services Union - BFSU:

“I hope to create videos of our union events and training programmes, and share them on BFSU's Facebook and Instagram pages to better showcase our activities.”

Since you've made it all the way to the end, here's a little sneak peek!

Look forward to an enhanced edition of this course in 2027! We're incorporating AI tools to help union leaders generate content ideas, develop storyboards and plan shot lists, making video creation more accessible and efficient!

What makes a union leader a union leader?

It starts with the willingness to step forward.

To listen. To understand the concerns of fellow workers. To speak up for them. And to support them when it matters.

For many new union leaders, Foundation Programme 1 (FP1) is one of their first learning experiences at the Institute. The programme introduces them to the Labour Movement and helps them understand the roles, responsibilities and values of a union leader, building a foundation for the journey ahead.

During today’s FP1, we asked three participants from the Public Utilities Board Employees' Union and FDAWU - Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union :

“What motivated you to become a union leader?”

From wanting to be a voice for their colleagues to standing up for fairness and workers’ rights, their answers remind us that every union leader has a reason for stepping forward.

How can AI help union leaders perform their union work more effectively?

Yesterday, the Institute conducted a customised run of Basic AI Tools for Personal Productivity for union leaders from the Advanced Manufacturing Employees' Union (AMEU).

Participants explored practical ways to use AI in their day-to-day work, from crafting more effective prompts and analysing information to improving presentations, coordination and member communication.

Brother George Lee highlighted how AI could support communication with members:

“I can use AI to simplify WhatsApp messages and prepare them in different languages, so that our messages are easier for members from different backgrounds to understand.”

Through practical applications like these, the Institute continues to equip union leaders with the confidence and skills to make meaningful use of AI in their work.

OTCi trainers each bring their own style to the classroom 👀

Mr Welfare, The Props Master, Mr Adaptable or The Hype Man.

Different styles, same commitment to helping our learners get the most out of every session.

So... who’s your pick?

Every classroom has one 👀

The Early Bird who is somehow always there first.
The Question King with “just one more question”.
The Blur One trying very hard to keep up.
The Snack Hunter counting down to break time.
And of course, The Kiasu One who came prepared for everything. 😄

At OTCi, every learner brings their own style to the classroom, but the goal is the same: to keep learning, building new skills and growing as workplace leaders.

Which learner are you?

We turn 36! 🎉

Since 1 September 1990, when we began as the Singapore Institute of Labour Studies (SILS), we have been committed to developing strong workplace leaders, building collaborative labour-management relationship and progressing the practice of Tripartism in Singapore.

Today, as the Ong Teng Cheong Labour Leadership Institute (OTCi), we continue to equip union leaders, HR practitioners and management partners with the knowledge and skills to navigate workplace challenges, strengthen partnerships, and better support workers in a time of disruptions and transformation.

Here’s to 36 years of learning, leadership and stronger workplaces.

Every event has its memorable moments, and this was no exception.

Here's a look back at the conversations, laughter and learning that made up the IWETF Annual Leaders Gathering 2026. Hear from our union leaders as they share what they took away from the day and why these learning opportunities matter.

We hope you enjoy this recap.

Meaningful conversations build stronger leadership.

NTUC Deputy Secretary-General Desmond Choo 朱倍庆 recently met with key union leaders over a small group engagement session organised by the Institute. The open dialogue provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives, discuss workplace challenges and strengthen leadership in support of workers. Such sessions are an important aspect of the Institute’s holistic leadership development programmes.
