The passing of Sonny Rollins marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the history of jazz.
He was not only one of the greatest tenor saxophonists who ever lived, but the very epitome of fierce dedication, relentless self-improvement, and fearless innovation. In the same rarefied league as the true giants of jazz, Sonny Rollins stood apart because of the astonishing spontaneity of his improvisation.
There was never a sense that he approached a solo with a fixed agenda or preconceived destination. Instead, he seemed to create in real time โ soaring, searching, playful, profound, and endlessly alive in the moment. Every solo felt like a living conversation with both the music and the audience.
For all of us in the jazz world, and certainly for those of us at the Jazz Association (Singapore), Sonny Rollins was a pillar and an inspiration.
His artistry reminded us that jazz is ultimately about courage, honesty, risk-taking, and the eternal pursuit of growth.
The world has lost one of its towering musical voices, but his sound, spirit, and example will continue to inspire generations to come.
The entire jazz community mourns his passing deeply. Rest in peace, Sonny Rollins.
