The Council for World Mission (CWM) has welcomed three new interns who have begun serving across its offices in Singapore, Johannesburg, and London.

Coming from different cultural and denominational backgrounds, the interns support regional and global programmes while gaining experience in mission initiatives, cross-contextual learning, and justice-centred engagement.

The new interns are Philippa Osei from the United Reformed Church (URC), who joined the Singapore office on 6 April; Nofy Ramanamirija from the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar (FJKM), who joined the South Africa office on 4 May; and Ye Eun Baek from the Presbyterian Church in Korea (PCK), who joined the London office on 5 February.

The six-month internship programme provides opportunities for young people to grow professionally and spiritually while contributing meaningfully to CWM’s global mission.

The Onesimus Project (TOP) in Malawi is strengthening efforts to address labour exploitation and modern-day slavery in tea-growing communities through its project, Empowering Communities to Combat Modern-Day Slavery: Awareness and Training, implemented by the Churches of Christ in Malawi (CCM).

The project is being carried out in the districts of Thyolo, Mulanje, and Phalombe, where communities face ongoing challenges related to labour exploitation, economic vulnerability, and limited awareness of workers’ rights.

The project forms part of TOP’s wider commitment to addressing modern-day slavery through community empowerment, education, advocacy, and accompaniment. By strengthening local capacity and raising awareness of labour rights, the initiative seeks to support vulnerable communities in resisting exploitation and promoting human dignity.

Church representatives and ecumenical leaders from across the Council for World Mission’s (CWM) global partnership gathered in Mae Sot, Thailand, from 27 to 30 May for the Church in Action: A Place of Refuge – Faith Communities Engaging with Migrant and Refugee Communities programme.

The gathering brought together 18 participants, including partners and CWM staff from member churches and ecumenical organisations across Africa, the Caribbean, East Asia, Europe, the Pacific, and South Asia.

Held near the Thailand–Myanmar border, the programme immersed participants in a complex context shaped by migration, conflict, displacement, labour exploitation, and border insecurity. More than a learning event, the gathering sought to equip churches to respond theologically, pastorally, and prophetically to the realities faced by migrants and refugees.

The programme also affirmed the need for ongoing theological reflection within the CWM communion on how churches can embody refuge not only through hospitality, but also through justice, accompaniment, and transformation.

Church leaders, pastors, lay leaders, women, youth, and Sunday school teachers from the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu (PCV) gathered in Port Vila from 27 to 30 May for a joint mission consultation with the Council for World Mission (CWM).

The four-day consultation explored the future of mission in Vanuatu and reaffirmed a shared conviction that Christian mission begins with God rather than the church alone. Participants reflected on mission as both a spiritual calling and a practical expression of faith, embodied through proclamation, discipleship, pastoral care, justice, reconciliation, and creation care.

The consultation also called on the church to adopt a more prophetic and transformational role in society, including addressing issues arising from the impact of seasonal worker programmes.

The consultation concluded with a commitment to continue reviewing and updating its findings as a living mission document to guide PCV’s witness and service in the years ahead.

Twelve representatives from Council for World Mission (CWM) member churches and an ecumenical partner from the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) gathered in Auckland from 16 to 26 May for the CWM Re-Visioning Education – Mission and Ministry with Children Consultation.

The consultation examined how churches can renew Christian education for contemporary contexts while remaining rooted in faith traditions. Participants reflected on inherited educational models, many of which were shaped by missionary approaches and systems developed in earlier eras and considered how these might be reimagined to better minister to children today.

The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to place children at the centre of faith formation and community life. Participants affirmed the importance of intergenerational ministry and expressed a shared desire to develop educational approaches that nurture faith, encourage participation, and equip children to flourish in a rapidly changing world.

Seventeen participants representing member churches of the Council for World Mission (CWM) and ecumenical partners across Europe and Africa gathered in London from 11–15 May for the Youth and Migration workshop under the 2026 Europe Youth Initiative.

Organised by the CWM Discipleship, Spiritualities, and Dialogue programme team and held at the Royal Foundation of St Katharine, the workshop explored migration as a defining missional concern for the 21st century.

One of the workshop’s key resource persons was Dr Gemma Tulud Cruz, a theologian of Filipino-Australian descent and faculty member at the Australian Catholic University. Cruz was also a former participant of CWM’s Discernment and Radical Engagement (DARE) programme.

In her sessions, Cruz reflected on the economic, political, and emotional realities migrants face, while encouraging participants to move beyond hostility and embrace solidarity and hospitality.

“Migration is a way of life,” Cruz said. “And even if we are not a migrant ourselves, we are all connected to migration—through family, friends, or the person who served me my coffee.”
