The school started its 3Rs effort back in the year 2000 when we participated in the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) Annual Green Audit Program. In 2001, the school joined Altvater Jacob’s Battery Recycling Program. In the same year, we achieved the Hibiscus Award from SEC. In 2002, the school took part in Altvater Jacob’s paper recycling scheme. That was the first time we had our paper recycling bins. In 2003, the school started having its own activities to sustain the interest of recycling in paper and batteries. Our recycling corner was set up and all the bins are placed there. It is also the first time the classes had their own recycling box. We achieved the Orchid Award from SEC. (refer to annex for the activities)

In 2004, our school joined the National Environment Agency’s “Schools’ Recycling Programme”. More activities were introduced in getting students involved with 3Rs. We achieved the Lotus Award from SEC. In 2005, a group of students volunteered to decorate the recycling corner reusing materials found inside the recycling bins. The school signed up for Altvater Jacob‘s SMART (Student Must Always Recycle Trash) program to collect recyclables. The school introduced the Green Class Award to encourage students to actively support the SMART program. The school also got its first batch of 3 Environment Champions. For their good work done that year, they were awarded the Silver Badge. We achieved the Lotus Award from SEC for the second time. In addition, we were awarded Silver and Best Newcomer in the 3Rs Project Competition by National Environment Agency (NEA). In 2006, the school started it Environmental Club named LIGERS (Learning Innovative Green Efforts and Recreational Science). The CARE (Conscientiously Achieving RE – REduce, REcycle, REward) program was initiated by the LIGERS Environmental Club to replace the SMART program as Altvater Jacob’s contract with NEA is about to end. Colex is now our PWC. This year we sent another 3 Environmental Champion for training. We also registered for the Outreach Program by NEA. Our new partner, Asahi Techno Vision Pte Ltd adopted our school from March 2006 - Aug 2007. In Aug 2007, we are adopted by PureChem Veolia Environmental Services Pte Ltd, after we were informed that Asahi Techno Vision Pte Ltd is wrapping up their business in Singapore. In Sept 2008, 2 Sec 1 students (Nikki and Farah of 1E2) designed our official CCA logo. The club aims to have more students involvement in protecting the Environment and to have students develop educational kit to make them more involved in the environment education. (We believed in "For the students, By the students")

The following are the goals that we will want to achieve within 2 years:

Classrooms activities
1. Using recycled materials to decorate class.

World Environment Day is celebrated yearly on 5 June to engage everyone around the world to focus their efforts on pressing environmental issue.

It pushes for individuals to think about the way they consume; for businesses to develop greener models; for farmers and manufacturers to produce more sustainably; for governments to safeguard wild spaces.

For all Bukit Viewans, we hope you will be inspired to live in harmony with the Earth to become ethical advocates for a green future by taking some immediate actions such as using less plastic, opening your windows for a cleaner air than switching on air-conditioners, trying to grow edible plants for a sustainable future and reducing food wastage.

This year, the theme is biodiversity, which is both urgent and existential. Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, many countries have adopted lockdowns.

This, in fact, has led to a positive impact on our earth. Our carbon footprint has become lower, the air is cleaner, our water quality has improved and wildlife such as turtles have been spotted to return to areas they once avoided to lay their eggs. In addition, plants have been growing well providing us with more oxygen.

A greener future, requires effort from all of us. Let’s stay united for the nature!

Today is International Day for Biological Diversity!
This year theme is "Our solutions are in nature".
To ensure that biodiversity thrives, do your part!

Some examples are:
1. Reduce the use of plastic bags/containers
2. Use energy and water efficiently
3. Plant more trees
4. Look to nature for solutions eg using mangroves to prevent flooding of coastlines.
5. Do not eat wildlife

Can you think of more ways that we can do our part?

As we move into the third week of the Circuit Breaker, Singapore continues to work together with our bilateral, regional and international partners to support efforts to strengthen our food supply chains and ensure that everyone has access to a sustainable, secure and safe food supply.

I participated in the Extraordinary Virtual G20 Agriculture Ministers Meeting in Response to COVID-19 held last evening. It was convened by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which holds the G20 Presidency this year. I am deeply appreciative of the efforts of the Saudi Arabia Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al Fadhli to advance dialogue on coordinated responses to COVID-19 impacts on food security and nutrition.

In this challenging global situation, it is important that countries work closely together to keep trade lines open. At the meeting, I spoke on the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global food security. Singapore has taken steps to prepare for the threat of food supply disruptions, including by putting our “30-by-30” goal on a fast track (also known as the “30x30 Express”). To effectively strengthen our individual and collective food resilience, countries must ensure global food supply chains continue to flow well.

I am heartened that the G20 Agriculture Ministers adopted a statement in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to deliver a strong and reassuring message to the world on the determination of G20 countries to take proactive steps to mitigate risks to food systems. I look forward to working with them on the broader G20 agriculture and food agenda.

In a similar show of solidarity, the ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) also issued a joint statement last week to reaffirm their commitment to ensure food security, food safety and nutrition during this outbreak. We had also agreed to ensure that trade lines remain open to facilitate the flow of agricultural and food products. You can read the statement here: https://asean.org/statement-asean-ministers-agriculture-forestry-response-outbreak-coronavirus-disease-covid-19-ensure-food-security-food-safety-nutrition-asean/

This is an unprecedented time for all countries. But if we work together, I am confident we can overcome the challenges and emerge as a stronger global community.
