As we step into 2026 year of horse, a year many approach with uncertainty amidst economic shifts and layoffs, these traditional greetings offer more than just well-wishes—they serve as powerful reminders of our inner resilience and path.
May these five reflections bring wisdom and peace to you and your family this season. Happy Chinese New Year!
(Xīn Nián Kuài Lè) — Happy Chinese New Year
The Theme: Precious Life
While "Happy New Year" is a standard wish, the Dalai Lama reminds us that true happiness begins with gratitude for the present moment:
“Every day, think as you wake up: today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, and I am not going to waste it.”
In a landscape of uncertainty, we use this greeting to anchor ourselves in the "positive possibilities" of the now. We resolve to use our energy not just for survival, but to expand our hearts and benefit all beings.
(Bù Bù Gāo Shēng) — Progress with Every Step
The Theme: Diligent Practice
This wish for "ascending higher" mirrors the Buddha’s final instructions: "Strive on with diligence." To progress on the path isn't necessarily about corporate climbing, but about moving forward despite adversity. As Sayadaw U Tejaniya suggests, As awareness and wisdom improve, defilements (mental impurities) naturally become weaker, this is the results of practice
(Nián Nián Yǒu Yú) — Abundance Every Year
The Theme: Counting Blessings
This famous pun on "Fish" and "Surplus" wishes for a life that overflows. In the Mangala Sutta, the Buddha outlines 38 "Greatest Blessings" that constitute true abundance—such as associating with the wise and residing in a pleasant locality. When we shift our focus from what we lack to the "meritorious actions" we have performed, we realize our spiritual abundance is already more "overflowing" than we imagined.
(Xīn Xiǎng Shì Chéng) — May Your Heart’s Desires Be Realized
The Theme: Mastery of Mind
This greeting points to the power of intention. The Dhammapada (Verse 1) tells us:
“Mind is the chief forerunner of all good states. Experiences are led by and produced by the mind.”
Our reality follows our thoughts. If our desires are rooted in goodwill and skillfulness, our outcomes lead to happiness. By recognizing the mind as the origin of our actions, we gain the key to changing our year ahead from the inside out.
(Jīn Yù Mǎn Táng) — A House Filled with Gold and Jade
The Theme: The Noble Search
While this traditionally wishes for material wealth, the Dhamma points us toward the "Triple Gem"—a wealth that does not decay. In the Ariyapariyesana Sutta, the Buddha speaks of the "Noble Search": seeking that which is not subject to aging, illness, or death. While material riches eventually fade, the spiritual wealth gained through our practice is a treasure that remains steady.
