In December 1979, teen idol Leif Garrett performed live in the Philippines with a three-night concert at the Folk Arts Theater in Manila. The shows took place on December 7, 8, and 9, 1979, right at the height of Garrettโs popularity as one of the most recognizable teen stars of the late โ70s.
Presented by SM Shoemart and Young Image Magazine, the event also showcased Filipino talents such as Janet Basco, the band Wadab, and the WEA Dancers, directed by Manolo Brion.
Tickets were sold at highly affordable prices, from โฑ2 to โฑ75, making it accessible to a wide range of audiences. The concert was backed by major sponsors, including 99.5 RT, WEA Records, Pan-Pacific, Questor International, and Bonmark Sportswear.
At the time, the Folk Arts Theater was one of the premier venues for concerts and cultural shows in the Philippines. Built in 1974 for the Miss Universe Pageant, it became a landmark stage for both local and international performers. Hosting Leif Garrett in 1979 highlighted the growing connection of the Philippines to global pop culture during the closing years of the decade.
Known for hits like โI Was Made for Dancin" and โFeel the Needโ, Garrettโs Manila shows remain a nostalgic memory of the vibrant concert scene of the late 1970s โ an era when music idols from abroad were starting to regularly include Manila in their tours.
