🎵 Volunteer Spotlight | Sharing the Gift of Music 🎵
Meet Mr Steven Chow Heng Kee, 76, a dedicated volunteer at St. Andrew's Active Ageing Centre (Tampines Changkat) whose passion for music continues to inspire our seniors.
Before retirement, Mr Steven spent 35 years in China working as an Operations Manager at turbine power stations, helping to generate electricity. Life took an unexpected turn in 2023 when he was diagnosed with kidney failure. Today, he undergoes dialysis three times a week at NKF Punggol, with each session lasting four hours. Grateful for the government's support, he receives full subsidy for his dialysis treatment.
Despite these challenges, Mr Steven chooses to give back. Introduced to our centre by our staff, Wei Lie, through their shared love for music, he now volunteers once every two weeks to conduct Chinese singing classes for our seniors. A self-taught musician who plays the erhu, keyboard and zhongruan (Chinese lute), he believes that music is meant to be shared.
For Mr Steven, the greatest reward is seeing the smiles on the seniors' faces and witnessing their confidence and singing skills grow with every lesson. His story is a beautiful reminder that even while facing personal challenges, we can continue to bring hope, joy and connection to others.
