From 4 May to 30 June 2026, the Ministry of Transport is seeking public feedback on the legal framework that will govern autonomous vehicles (AVs).

The SPCA has responded with questions and suggestions on including animal welfare as a consideration. We asked if the framework would recognise animals as vulnerable road users, how liability would be attributed if an animal were to be hit by an AV, and what safeguards would be built in to protect animals and promote human-animal coexistence. In addition, we suggested monitoring trends in traffic incidents involving animals and making camera footage from AVs accessible if required to facilitate investigations concerning animal victims.

Cat touch consent: it’s not one size fits all, even with the same cat!

Meet Smolly. Some days she needs space. Other days, she walks right up and goes in for a rub. Same cat, same approach, completely different response.

Smolly came from a hoarding case, so patience and understanding go a long way. We let her take the lead every time, and in return, she shows us when she’s ready 🐈

Every cat deserves someone who takes the time to understand them. Could that be you? Come meet Smolly and the rest of our residents at our adoption drive this Saturday!

Meet Nico and Argo. When they press their weight against you, it’s their way of communicating trust and honestly, there’s no better feeling than a ‘dog lean’🩵

Every dog is different though! Nico loves pats and cuddles, so when he leans in, he’s giving you the green light for a good pat. Argo is a little more touch sensitive, so we always let him take the lead. Even when he leans, we don’t pat him unless he nudges our hands. Getting to know them and reading their body language makes all the difference.

📰 The A”dog”tion Times vol. 2: Letters from the Misunderstood

Four dogs. Four labels. Four stories the labels don’t tell.

The word “reactive” follows Cliff, Hazel, Cashmere and Peanut around. But “reactive” doesn’t mean dangerous, it means they were never given the time, the patience or the right person to feel safe.

This first edition zine features the curious, clever and hopeful cats in our care. Swipe to see them!

Miso is a quiet observer, taking his time to settle in. Pixie the brave little comet, zooming through every play session. Mochi is as soft as her name suggests. Fuyu is calm and makes every room feel cosier. Sunny is quiet but full of affection. Smolly is a loving girl, slowly finding her confidence. They’re all waiting for the right person to turn the page with them.

Do note that full window meshing is strictly required for all cats 🐈

📰 Extra! Extra! The first issue The Adoption Times is here: four good boys, four stories worth reading. Nick is back at our shelter after six years away, looking for the home that stays. Scooby has found his bounce and is ready for adventures. Ah Boy is hoping for a second chance after being left behind. Milo, a former street expert, is learning what it means to belong.

Ace's weekend plans 🐾

1. A long, calm morning walk. New bushes and smells MUST be investigated
2. Treats. Specifically, the duck ones. Yum.
3. Nap time, I love getting cosy in the blankets
4. Spy on my favourite staff (Surely they’re getting me more treats? Right?)
5. Play time! I’m a track star ⭐️
6. Another nap of course
