IRD is a global resource for innovative health research and delivery in over 20 countries.

With over 500 staff operating in seven countries, IRD has become a regional resource for innovative global health research and delivery. Founded in Karachi in 2004 and now based in Singapore, IRD has regional offices in Dhaka, Dubai, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta, Johannesburg and Karachi. Our teams support and operate global health delivery programs in Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, I

ndonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malawi, Nepal, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uganda, South Africa, Timor Leste, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Zimbabwe. IRD was founded in Karachi where a lack of well-trained researchers and development professionals, unrealistically low salaries in academia and the non-profit sector, and working environments that do not support innovation presented real challenges to overcome. Our solution lay in attracting back to Pakistan as many recent graduates as we could from some of the best global health and development training programs in the world. To achieve this, IRD established an operational model where all Directors are 100% grant-based and are primarily responsible for bringing in funding for themselves and their teams. In exchange for the risk they undertake for this responsibility, IRD Directors benefit from a professional environment that supports innovation and experimentation, while being compensated salaries that are comparable to academia and the non-profit sector in North America and the EU. We have taken the IRD model to where we work – bringing the best-trained nationals back to their countries for meaningful and rewarding work. Our managers and associates have world-class training, and access their local and global networks to develop and implement innovative new solutions to health and social problems. Our pioneering work in areas where global health, behavioral economics and information technology converge have provided an exciting impetus for growth. In 2012 and 2013, IRD spun off two project teams as independent enterprises operating completely on business principles. IRD's health informatics team became Interactive Health Solutions, our first for-profit enterprise, and our global health delivery team targeting the private sector became Community Health Solutions. While our growth has been remarkable by any standards, it is the people that work here that truly stand out. Because no matter where we work, our team brings the same drive for innovation and commitment to saving lives.

TB remains one of the most urgent infectious disease challenges in Pakistan, and early detection is central to changing outcomes.

Through IRD-supported TB work, screening, diagnostic testing, and linkage to care are brought together to help identify patients sooner and connect them to the treatment pathway.

These numbers reflect the scale of that effort: reaching communities, strengthening detection, and helping more people move from symptoms to confirmed care.

A child’s protection should not depend on memory, paper cards, or whether a family is able to return to the same health facility.

In routine immunization, the challenge is often continuity: knowing which children have received vaccines, which ones are due next, and where follow-up is needed.

By strengthening immunization tracking, IRD helps health teams reduce missed opportunities and keep children connected to care.

For many vulnerable communities, immunization is still disrupted by distance, missed follow-ups, weak records, and limited access to routine care. That means more children and families can be left unprotected from preventable disease.

Distance remains a major barrier to timely and continuous healthcare delivery.

In underserved communities, physical distance from facilities can affect when people are screened, diagnosed, referred, followed up, or connected to preventive services. This has direct implications for TB detection, routine immunization, and maternal health support.

IRD’s work focuses on reducing these access barriers through community-based delivery models, referral pathways, and partnerships that help care reach people earlier and more consistently.

IRD's work on newborn anomalies screening for external birth defects received the Circle of Cleft Professionals award at CLEFT 2025, the 15th International Congress on Cleft Lip/Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies in Kyoto, Japan. The recognition was for our approach to co-creating a curriculum that trains frontline health workers to identify and refer newborns with external birth defects for further treatment, giving families a chance at early intervention that many would otherwise never access.

With 1,400 professionals from 96 countries gathered in Kyoto, this was one of the most significant global platforms for cleft care. To be recognized there is a reflection of what our teams at IRD do every day in communities where access to specialist care is limited, and early detection makes all the difference.

This one belongs to the frontline health workers who make it real.
