At the Seminar on Women and Family in Islam last Thursday, Mufti Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir reflected on the progress of Muslim women in Singapore and the importance of continued collaboration in addressing issues concerning women and families.

He also emphasised the need to strengthen partnerships and build on the progress made over the years.

Recent haze episodes remind us of the importance of caring for our environment and looking out for one another, especially those more affected by the haze. Through small, thoughtful actions, we can each play a part in protecting the well-being of our community.

In Surah Az-Zalzalah, Allah reminds us that even an atom’s weight of good or evil will be seen.

Let us continue to spread rahmah, look out for one another and never underestimate the good we can do.

How can religious guidance better support Muslim women and families and speak to their realities?

Today, around 50 religious scholars, community leaders, policymakers and civil society partners gathered at the Seminar on Women and Family in Islam to reflect on the experiences and needs of Muslim women and families in Singapore, and how religious guidance can continue to support them while remaining firmly rooted in Islamic principles.

The seminar, organised by MUIS, with research and content contributions from PPIS led by its Research and Engagement Department (RED), also marked the launch of the Ustazaat Network, bringing together female religious educators from mosques, madrasahs and other religious institutions to share knowledge, exchange perspectives and collaborate on contemporary religious issues.

MUIS has also established a Women's Desk under the Office of the Mufti to strengthen research and engagement on religious issues affecting Muslim women and families, building on existing efforts.

Through these initiatives, MUIS hopes to strengthen religious guidance that understands the challenges women and families face, addresses their concerns and supports them through different stages of life.

Insights from the seminar will also inform preparations for the Symposium on Women and Family in Islam in 2027.

We often hear that Surah Al-‘Alaq reminds us of the importance of reading. But within the very same surah, we are also reminded to remain humble.

Perhaps the lesson is this: the more we learn, the more humble we should become.

Because knowledge is not just about knowing more. It is also about recognising the One who taught us in the first place.

Ustaz Afandi Amat, Ustaz Muhammad Mustafa and Ustazah A’tii Qah Suhaimi will be representing Singapore at the 66th International Tilawah & Hafazan Al-Quran Competition (MTHQA).

Ustaz Afandi Amat will serve as a jury member, while Ustaz Muhammad Mustafa and Ustazah A’tii Qah Suhaimi will compete alongside some of the finest qaris and qariahs from around the world.

The competition will take place from 6 to 10 October 2026 at the World Trade Center Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). The event will also be broadcast live from Dewan Merdeka, starting at 8:45 PM on TV1 and JAKIM’s social media channels.

Let us pray for Ustaz Muhammad and Ustazah A’tii Qah, that Allah s.w.t. grants them confidence, fluency and excellence in their recitation and blesses their efforts throughout the competition.

May Allah s.w.t. accept their efforts, grant them ease and success and make their journey with the Quran a source of continued blessings.
