Singapore Management University’s Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) programme turns 20 this year — a good moment to ask what keeps a community like this alive after graduation.

extends its warmest congratulations to Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education) Assoc Prof Edward Ti on the publication of his latest monograph, The Singapore Torrens System After Baalman (2026), with the Singapore Academy of Law.

The monograph marks an important addition to Singapore’s property law literature as the first comprehensive clause-by-clause commentary on the Land Titles Act 1993 (2020 Rev Ed) since John Baalman’s seminal commentary on the Land Titles Ordinance 1956 in 1961. More than six decades on, Assoc Prof Ti’s work provides an updated and comprehensive reference for practitioners, academics, decision-makers and students, reflecting the continued development of Singapore’s Torrens system and property law jurisprudence.

The publication was marked by a seminar hosted by SAL on 4 September, graced by Guest of Honour Mr Murali Pillai SC, Senior Minister of State for Law and Transport, and also featured a panel discussion with Assoc Prof Ti, Ms Ang Ching Pin, Registrar of Titles and Deeds and Assistant Chief Executive (Regulatory and Corporate) at the Singapore Land Authority; Mr Oommen Mathew, Managing Director, Omni Law LLC; and Mr Wan Kwong Weng, Group Chief Corporate Officer and Group General Counsel, Mapletree Investments.

The significance of the monograph is reflected in its forewords. Justice of the Court of Appeal Ang Cheng Hock describes it as “the first port of call for practitioners and judges on any issue relating to registered land” and “essential reading”, while Attorney-General Lucien Wong calls it “an invaluable contribution to the development of a truly Singapore property law jurisprudence.”

The work also benefited from the consulting editorship of Mr TPB Menon and ’s Prof Tang Hang Wu. Assoc Prof Ti held the Yong Pung How Fellowship while writing the book and has expressed his appreciation for the Fellowship’s research support.

More than 60 years after Baalman’s work, Assoc Prof Ti’s scholarship carries the conversation forward — deepening the understanding of Singapore property law while contributing to the profession and the continued development of our legal system. It reflects ’s commitment to scholarship that makes a meaningful difference in law and practice.

These were the words shared by Singapore Management University Chairman Mr Piyush Gupta at our recent Donor Appreciation Dinner — and they capture something essential about giving: it isn't about what you get back, but what you help build for others.

That spirit is at the heart of this year’s theme, ‘Build for Better’, which reflects our aspirations for the next phase of SMU’s giving journey. More than passive giving, it is about building a shared future together, one in which donors play an active role in creating impact and expanding what is possible.

SMU President Professor Lily Kong echoed this mindset, describing donors as co-creators and partners in a shared journey in her remarks. Their support enables SMU to shape our direction, raise our ambitions and unlock new possibilities for our students, research and communities.

Guests also enjoyed exciting performances by three SMU student groups: hip-hop dance group Eurhythmix (EMIX), a ca****la group VOIX and the SMU Chinese Orchestra (SMUCO). Together, they showcased the energy, creativity and vibrancy of the SMU community.

We watched Shannon's journey with the SMU Student Managed Investment Fund Portfolio from the very first pitch. She presented the case to the club's alumni, refining the vision until belief turned into real capital. We're incredibly proud of what she and her team have achieved — turning classroom concepts into real investing experience, not just paper trades. For many students, financial worry doesn’t show up on a tuition bill alone. It shows up in the decision to skip a university event to save on transport, or to put off that overseas programme for another year.

When those pressures ease, everything changes. Believing that the most transformative learning experiences takes place outside of the classroom and in moments of discomfort, Dr Shreya Jajoo (MiM 2016) has established the Jajoo Udaan SMU-X Overseas Exposure Grant. The fund aims to provide aspiring female students access to cross-border academic experiences, enriching cultural exposure, and independence without financial worry.

Established in memory of her late grandfather and inspired by the Hindi word ‘udaan’, means reaching new heights, the gift is both a tribute to a legacy of giving, and a heartfelt gesture to mark a significant milestone for Shreya. By providing a pathway for students to access learning beyond the classroom without financial worries, Shreya hopes that the fund will provide recipients with the confidence to approach future opportunities with greater ambition, perspective, and self-belief, and to return from these experiences feeling that the world is bigger, more accessible, and full of possibilities they are capable of pursuing.
