Welcome to Part 2 of our Kopi Sessions ☕️ on the topic of Trafficking and S*x Work in Singapore. With us is Vanessa Ho from Project X (Project X 🇸🇬🇸🇬), an organisation that supports s*x workers in Singapore.

In this episode, we talk about how demand for s*xual services continues to drive the industry. Given this, what protections are needed to reduce harm and prevent exploitation?

From labour protections and safe reporting channels to reducing trafficking risks and violence, we must shift the conversation to forefront the rights, safety and dignity of workers.

This marks the final post of our Employment Act (EA) ammendments series. In this post, we call for a Universal Living Wage for all workers in Singapore, as we touch on existing wage policies that exclude migrant workers 🗣️

We submitted this joint report, together with TWC2, Here With You, and Workers Make Possible, to push for greater protections for low-wage workers, especially migrant workers – a group that is often overlooked or considered last.

We must continue to advocate for the rights of the more than 1 million low-wage migrant workers who face significant barriers when it comes to advocating for themselves 🤜💥🤛

Everyone say congratulations to the recent graduates of HOME Academy!

Last month, HOME celebrated the graduation of our HOME Academy students who began their courses with us in February this year 🎓🥂🎉

The celebration featured performances by HOME Family interest groups, as well as showcases from our Guitar and Dressmaking courses, highlighting the creativity and hard work of our graduates 🎸👗

Singapore's domestic workers have a critical role in caring for our homes and families, especially our elderly and children 🏠🏢

But domestic workers are still not protected by the fundamental labour rights that others might take for granted— annual leave, limits on working hours, overtime pay, or being able to resign with sufficient notice.

Instead, many are at the mercy of their agencies and employers, with little protection from the vague provisions of the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (EFMA). Recognising domestic workers in the Employment Act (EA) is critical for their welfare, dignity, and rights ✊✊✊

Today, 30 July, is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

At HOME, we have supported migrant women who were deceived and trafficked for the purposes of s*xual exploitation. They were promised jobs as beauticians, receptionists or legitimate masseuses and had to pay thousands in recruitment fees. They arrived in Singapore severely indebted and were coerced into providing s*xual services they did not agree to.

In Part 1 of this special Kopi Sessions episode, HOME’s Executive Director Stephanie Chok joins Vanessa Ho from Project X 🇸🇬🇸🇬 to discuss the realities of forced labour in Singapore’s s*x industry, why victim identification matters, and how a victim-centric approach is needed to protect those who have been deceived and exploited.

In Part 2, we’ll explore another important question: if the demand for s*xual services exists, what protections are needed to reduce harm and prevent exploitation?
